Export your notes from the current app, save a separate copy somewhere you control, and test-import a small set before moving the whole library or closing the old account. Export options depend on the app, platform, and account type, and no format is guaranteed to preserve every attachment, layout, or app-specific feature.
Before you export: inventory what needs to move
Make a quick list of the source app and account type, the notebooks or pages you need, and any content that would be hard to recreate. Note whether the library includes attachments, scans, tables, databases, handwritten notes, or nested pages. These details help you select an export that the new app can accept and identify what to inspect afterward.
- Record which notebooks, folders, pages, or databases are in scope.
- Identify representative notes with images, files, links, rich formatting, or unusual layouts.
- Check whether your export route depends on a desktop app, operating system, or account location.
Choose an export format that fits the move
There is no single best format for every migration. Compare the options by whether the new app accepts them, whether they remain editable, how much hierarchy and database structure they retain, and whether you can open them without the original app.

If the destination offers a supported structured import, use that for migration and keep a human-readable export as a separate reference when practical. Neither choice should be treated as a perfect replica.

Export notes from the source app
Evernote
Evernote’s documented export is available in its desktop app for Mac or Windows, not Evernote Web. Export selected notes or an entire notebook, choosing ENEX, single-page HTML, or multi-page HTML. Export notebook by notebook when that makes the content easier to track, and confirm how attachments and notebook organization appear in the destination rather than assuming they transfer identically. Microsoft OneNote
Microsoft’s OneNote for the web download or import route applies to notebooks stored in personal OneDrive accounts. Microsoft says it does not work for work or school OneDrive or SharePoint notebooks. If your notebook is in an organization account, consult Microsoft’s current export and import instructions for an applicable route rather than assuming the personal-account procedure will work. Obsidian documents a separate plugin-based OneNote migration path, with platform and export limitations; check its current OneNote import instructions for your setup.

Notion
Notion allows export of a page, database, or entire workspace in PDF, HTML, or Markdown & CSV. For a Markdown & CSV export, the ZIP contains Markdown pages and CSV files for databases. When exporting a parent page with nested content, enable “Include subpages” if those pages belong in your archive. Notion says the ZIP includes a sitemap named index.html to help navigate the export. Apple Notes and Obsidian as destinations
Apple documents importing Evernote ENEX files, each of which can contain multiple notes. It warns that unsupported features or attachments will not be imported. Apple also documents Markdown import on macOS Tahoe 26, iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and later; do not assume that Markdown import is available on older releases. See Apple’s Notes import instructions.

Obsidian documents imports from several apps and formats, including an Evernote ENEX workflow through its official Importer plugin. Its general import guide lists supported routes; plugin steps and platform limitations can change, so check the current instructions for the app you are leaving.
Keep a separate backup copy
After exporting, retain one copy for the import process and another independent copy in storage you control, such as local storage. Notion’s backup guidance recommends downloading exports and keeping them on a hard drive; see Notion’s backup guidance. A second copy is not automatically encrypted or offsite: those protections require separate choices about where and how you store it.

Check the export, then test a pilot import
- Open the export. If it is a ZIP, inspect its contents. Confirm that expected files or folders exist and open several important notes.
- Check attachments. Look for image and file assets alongside exported notes, and open a few to confirm they are present and readable.
- Import a representative sample. Include a note with an attachment, one with rich formatting and links, and any special structure that matters to you.
- Compare source and destination. Check that text, images, files, links, notebook or page organization, and any database rows appear as expected.
- Resolve gaps before bulk import. Adjust the format or import method if the pilot reveals missing attachments, altered layouts, or unsupported content.
Notion warns that complex layouts, styling, and app-specific features may need cleanup after import. Apple’s guidance likewise says unsupported Evernote features or attachments may not import. Use the pilot to find problems while the source library is still available.
Switch only after the new library is usable
Keep access to the original account until you have imported the notes you need and checked the destination library. Confirm that important attachments open and links work, and compare a sample against the original. The appropriate amount of checking depends on how much the notes matter and how complex the library is; no universal audit standard guarantees a complete transfer.
