These are separate problems and need different checks. Begin with low-impact checks, keep Guardian safety cues enabled, and contact Meta if the fault persists. Factory reset is a last resort.
First identify which problem you have
Notice what is actually going wrong before changing settings. A view or room position that jumps points to headset tracking; a controller that drifts or disappears points to controller tracking; a controller that will not respond may have a power or pairing problem; and a boundary that appears in the wrong place or at the wrong time is a Guardian issue. Meta documents controller tracking and boundary behavior separately.
- Headset tracking: the view or your position in the room jumps, drifts, or tracking is lost.
- Controller tracking: one or both controllers appear in the wrong place, drift, or disappear.
- Controller power or pairing: a controller does not respond or connect.
- Guardian: the boundary is misplaced, will not stay put, or appears unexpectedly.
If headset tracking is lost or the view jumps
- Check the headset’s current tracking setting and confirm that tracking is enabled. Menu labels and locations can change with software updates, so use the labels shown on your headset rather than relying on an old path.
- Look over the headset’s tracking camera area and check that nothing is obstructing it.
- Try again in a clear, evenly lit room. This is a diagnostic check, not proof that lighting or another environmental factor caused the problem.
- If the tracking prompt continues after a normal reboot and in a different environment, contact Meta through its Quest support page.
Meta’s available consumer guidance does not establish a complete cleaning, lighting, or reflective-surface procedure here. Avoid using abrasive materials or guessing at camera-care instructions; consult Meta support for device-specific advice.
If controllers drift, disappear, or appear in the wrong place
- Check whether the fault affects one controller or both.
- See whether it occurs in the system interface and in more than one app. A problem limited to one app may not indicate a general controller-tracking fault.
- Check controller power separately from tracking. If a controller is unresponsive as well as misplaced, follow the power checks in the next section.
- If the tracking problem continues in normal use, use Meta’s Quest support page and select your device.
Meta’s Quest 3 simulator guidance for developers says to turn a controller’s top surface toward the headset when simulated controller poses appear inaccurate. That advice concerns simulated poses in development and is not a proven repair for real-world controller tracking problems.

If a controller is unresponsive or will not connect
Check power first
A low or depleted battery can make a controller stop responding. If the controller uses a replaceable battery, check its state and replace it if low or depleted. This is a power check only; it does not resolve every tracking or pairing fault. Do not disassemble the controller.
If it has power but remains disconnected
Use Meta’s current pairing instructions or contact Meta Quest support. The consumer pairing menu sequence is not established here, so avoid following an unverified button or menu sequence.

If Guardian or the boundary is misplaced or appears unexpectedly
Guardian marks the defined play space. It provides proximity cues and passthrough assistance as you approach the boundary. Keep a clear, suitable play area and retain safety cues while troubleshooting; do not disable Guardian to hide an unwanted prompt.
- Check that the room and furniture arrangement are suitable and that the play space is clear.
- If the physical space is suitable but the boundary is still misplaced, recreate or adjust the boundary using the current labels on your headset.
- If the problem remains, check Meta’s current support guidance before changing boundary settings further.
Meta notes that the system can override software requests to hide or show the boundary in certain conditions. An app’s hide/show behavior is therefore not a dependable consumer fix. The exact current consumer menu path for clearing boundary history is not established here; do not rely on outdated menu directions.

When to contact Meta or factory reset
Contact Meta if the same fault persists after the relevant checks and a normal reboot, especially if it affects more than one app or appears hardware-related. Meta’s device support selection page currently says it is aware of issues affecting Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S. Select Quest 3 and check the live notice, since its status can change.
Consider a factory reset only after less disruptive troubleshooting has failed. Follow Meta’s official Quest factory-reset guide for the current device-specific procedure, and review any backup prompts before proceeding. A reset is a larger escalation than checking settings, power, or boundary setup; it is not a guaranteed fix for every tracking fault.
