Its appeal is convenience for people who want Debian’s Unstable branch without assembling the desktop look themselves; its main trade-off is the additional maintenance and package-change risk associated with Sid.
What is Xebian?
Xebian describes itself as “an Xfce Debian based system that is much like Xubuntu.” It uses Debian Unstable, also known as Sid, and adds an Xfce configuration and artwork layer, including Greybird and Elementary Xfce themes from the Shimmer Project. The project says it is closest to a Debian blend, with a thin layer of artwork and configuration, rather than a substantially different system. Xebian project
That description is the project’s own characterization, not a claim that Xebian is an officially supported Debian edition. Debian’s documentation distinguishes a blend, which aims to mainstream with Debian, from a derivative, which aims to differentiate. Debian Pure Blends documentation
Xebian’s stated approach also keeps close to Debian’s Xfce packaging: its FAQ says the project does not move Xfce components ahead of Debian’s Xfce team packaging. In practical terms, the product proposition is a familiar, configured Xfce desktop on Sid—not a separate Xfce software stack.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What does the Xebian desktop offer?
Xebian’s main page describes a traditional desktop layout and an Xfce setup inspired by Xubuntu. The named themes give the default installation a coherent appearance without requiring the user to select and configure those pieces after installing Debian. Xebian project
That is a convenience difference, not evidence that Xebian is faster, lighter, or more reliable than Debian with Xfce. Debian offers Xfce as an installable desktop choice, so users can build a comparable kind of desktop on Debian stable or another Debian track, while making their own configuration decisions. How current are the available Xebian images?
The dates matter because the project lists both a dated main download and newer development images. The main Xebian download page says its amd64 (64-bit) ISO was last updated on August 11, 2025. Do not mistake that image for a 2026 production release. Xebian project
The project’s pending directory lists two later images, but identifies them as staging builds; the project cautions that development builds are not production-ready. The listed sizes and directory timestamps are:

What does Debian Sid mean for daily use?
Sid is Debian’s Unstable branch. It receives ongoing package changes, but “unstable” does not mean every installation is constantly broken; it does mean users should expect a less conservative update experience than Debian stable. Debian warns that packages in unstable can temporarily be unavailable, fail to install, or not behave properly, and says the branch generally requires ongoing administrator attention. It advises users unsure which branch to choose to use stable. Debian FAQ: choosing a distribution

Security handling is another branch-level distinction, not evidence of a known Xebian vulnerability. Debian says its Security Team’s work focuses on stable and oldstable; fixes for unstable flow through the main archive and can later reach testing. Debian FAQ: choosing a distribution
The branch name and release tracks can change over time. Debian’s archive documentation identifies Sid as unstable; check the current archive information when deciding which Debian track best matches your needs. Debian Archive README

Xebian vs. Debian stable with Xfce
The more useful comparison is not a speed contest, for which there is no current controlled benchmark here. It is a choice between Xebian’s ready-made desktop on Sid and Debian stable’s more conservative update track with Xfce selected or configured by the user.

Installation and trying Xebian
Xebian’s project page offers a 64-bit live ISO, a manifest, and checksum links, and identifies Calamares as its installer. A live image lets you start from the image before committing to an installation. Debian’s live-image guidance also explains writing live images to USB keys. Xebian project · Debian live install images
- Open the Xebian project download page and confirm which image it currently presents as the production download.
- Download the ISO and the project’s manifest or checksum information, then use those files to verify the download according to the project’s instructions.
- Write the image to a USB drive using an image-writing utility. Debian documents live images on USB keys, but the particular Xebian page should guide the Xebian-specific download and verification. Debian live install images
- Boot the computer from the USB drive to try the live desktop. If you choose to install, follow the available Calamares installer prompts and back up important data before changing disk partitions.
The project page offers an amd64 image; it does not establish a hardware compatibility matrix or a universal minimum system requirement. Confirm that the target computer supports the image and check current project documentation for device-specific guidance.
Performance and system requirements
The available published performance figures are historical observations, not specifications. In a review published on August 24, 2023, The Register reported just over 700 MB of RAM in use at idle and a 4.4 GB disk footprint on its review configuration. Those values do not predict current usage or establish minimum requirements; the review also noted that its tested image used more idle memory than Xubuntu 22.04. The Register’s 2023 review
No controlled benchmark, Xebian-specific hardware compatibility matrix, or official system-requirement figure is established by the available project information. Xfce alone is not enough to conclude that a particular Xebian build will be ultralight or suitable for a specific older computer.
Quick Recap
Who should choose Xebian?
- Consider it if you want a preconfigured Xfce desktop, prefer the Sid package stream, and are comfortable following updates and handling occasional package issues.
- Choose Debian stable with Xfce instead if lower change frequency and a lighter ongoing maintenance burden matter more than receiving Xebian’s out-of-the-box desktop configuration.
- Wait or verify first if you need a clearly current production image: the dated main ISO and the newer staging builds have different statuses, and staging images are not presented as production-ready.
