How do I post a comment or reply?
Look for the comment field beneath the video, post, or discussion, write your message, and select the submit control. The exact labels and steps depend on the service and the type of content.
Post or reply on a YouTube video
- Open the video and scroll to its comments.
- Enter your text in the “Add a comment…” box and select Comment.
- To reply to someone, select REPLY beneath their comment, write your response, and submit it.
YouTube allows comments on videos, songs, podcasts, and uploaded music when the owner has enabled them. See YouTube’s comment help for current instructions.
Comment on a YouTube channel post
Channel owners can find a post in YouTube Studio under Content and Posts, then open its comments to reply. Owners can also adjust settings for an individual post, pin a comment, or hold comments. YouTube says the Pause option is not currently available for posts. The controls are described in YouTube’s post help.

Comment elsewhere
On another social app, article, or forum, use its comment field and submit control. If the controls or rules are unclear, consult that service’s help page; a comment field is not available on every post or page.
Who can see my comment?
Visibility depends on the platform, content settings, and audience. Do not assume a comment is private because you posted it from a personal or work account.

- YouTube public videos: comments are public, and anyone may reply.
- YouTube unlisted videos: anyone with the link can see comments.
- YouTube private videos: comments are unavailable.
- Facebook and Instagram: the post owner can restrict who may comment, such as the public, friends, or selected profiles and Pages. Check the post’s audience and comment settings before submitting.
YouTube notes that comments posted by Google Apps users may be visible to people outside the user’s domain. If you are using an organization-managed account, do not treat the domain as a privacy boundary. Meta’s Safety Center describes its comment and audience controls; menu names and availability can change.
Why can’t I comment?
First check whether comments are enabled for that content. The owner or platform may have turned them off, or limited participation to eligible viewers.

On YouTube, commenting may be unavailable if the video is private or its owner has disabled comments. The owner may instead limit commenting to subscribers or members, or require a minimum subscription period. If you do not have a YouTube channel, posting a comment automatically creates one. These restrictions are described in YouTube’s comment help.
On Facebook or Instagram, a post owner’s audience or comment controls may exclude you. On other services, eligibility rules differ; check the specific post and service help rather than assuming the problem is with your account.

Can I edit or delete a comment?
Controls differ by service. On YouTube, use the More menu beside your own comment to edit or delete it, as explained in YouTube’s comment help. Other platforms may offer different controls, so check their instructions for the comment type in question.

A comment may be held for review, filtered, reported, or removed under a platform’s rules or the content owner’s moderation settings. On YouTube, creators can use moderation tools, and viewers can report comments as spam or abuse. YouTube says repeated comments its systems identify as potentially violating Community Guidelines may be removed, and commenting may be paused for up to 24 hours. It also describes a pre-posting reminder for comments that could be considered offensive; the reminder is currently described as available for comments in English and Spanish. Meta describes options to hide comments containing selected words, use a profanity filter on a Page, report abuse, and restrict accounts. The controls depend on the service and account type; consult the Meta Safety Center for current guidance.
How can a page or channel owner manage comments?
Owners and moderators may be able to restrict who can comment, filter or hide comments, hold them for review, pin them, or report them. Which actions are available varies by platform and content type.
For YouTube channel posts, owners can open comments from YouTube Studio > Content > Posts, reply, change settings for an individual post, pin a comment, or hold comments. YouTube says Pause is not currently available for posts; see YouTube’s post help. Meta’s Safety Center covers comment audiences, selected-word hiding, Page profanity filters, reporting, and account restrictions. Its controls and labels may change.
What makes a comment useful?
Keep it relevant to the content: add information, ask a clear question, or offer constructive feedback. Address the idea rather than attacking the person, and avoid posting personal or sensitive information. These are practical suggestions, not universal platform rules.
On Meta Stack Exchange, comments are temporary notes attached to a question or answer. Its guidance recommends using them to request clarification, offer constructive criticism that helps improve a post, or add relevant minor or transient information. It advises against using a comment as a substitute for a substantive answer, empty praise, or extended debate. That guidance is specific to Stack Exchange; use an answer field when a service provides one for a full response. Read Meta Stack Exchange’s comment guidance.
