A brief hitch the first time a game renders an effect may be shader-compilation stutter; consistently poor performance across ordinary play is more characteristic of low FPS. Compare when the hitch happens, whether it returns in the same scene, and how long it lasts. Those patterns can help narrow the cause, but they are clues—not a conclusive diagnostic test—and both problems can occur together.

What separates shader-compilation stutter from low FPS?

Games use shaders as part of their graphics-rendering work. In a Direct3D pipeline, a driver may compile shader code into GPU-specific instructions when a pipeline state is created. That work can happen at launch or just in time during play, where it may interrupt rendering. AMD GPUOpen describes the pipeline and driver caching behavior in its overview of driver experiments; Microsoft explains the runtime-compilation issue in its Advanced Shader Delivery overview.

Shader-compilation stutter is usually a short, event-like interruption associated with first encountering a scene, effect, or pipeline. Low FPS is a broader pattern of persistently poor rendering performance during normal play, rather than one isolated hitch. A game can have both: compilation may cause occasional pauses while its general frame rate is also low.

Clue More consistent with shader-compilation stutter More consistent with low FPS
Timing Appears on first launch, entry into an area, or first use of an effect. Continues across ordinary gameplay, not just a new effect or scene.
Repeatability The same scene may hitch less on a later pass if compiled work is cached. Performance remains poor when you revisit the scene.
Duration A brief hitch or pause-like event. Ongoing sluggish or uneven rendering.
Scope May cluster around particular scenes or effects in one game. May affect play more broadly, though this clue alone does not identify the cause.

These are practical comparison clues derived from documented compilation and cache behavior, not an official test standard. The cited sources do not establish a universal frame-time threshold, a required monitoring app, or a consumer test that proves a hitch is shader-related.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to check the pattern in your game

  1. Note when it happens. Record whether the hitch appears during a loading or preparation phase, on first entry to a scene, when a visual effect first appears, or repeatedly throughout play.
  2. Revisit the same scene or effect. If the hitch eases on a second encounter, that is consistent with compiled shader or pipeline work being reused from a cache. It is not proof: unrelated stalls can also change from one pass to another.
  3. Check the game’s preparation step. If the game offers shader preparation or compilation at launch, let it finish where practical. Preparing work earlier can lengthen startup while reducing the amount of compilation needed during gameplay; it cannot guarantee a hitch-free experience.
  4. Compare the rest of play. If performance remains consistently poor across scenes and repeat visits, investigate broader performance causes instead of attributing every slowdown to shader compilation. The sources here do not identify one universal cause of sustained low FPS.

Why a hitch may improve—or return

Compiled shaders may be cached for later runs, so the first encounter with an effect can differ from a later one. Microsoft notes that shader data is specific to the game, GPU, and driver, and that driver updates can invalidate shader caches. A cache may therefore need to be rebuilt after an update, and different game or hardware combinations need not behave alike. See Microsoft’s introduction to Advanced Shader Delivery and the Direct3D 12 pipeline state cache sample.

Do not clear shader or pipeline caches as a routine first fix. A cold cache can mean the game or driver has to create pipeline state again; AMD GPUOpen describes longer startup or loading behavior when shader caching is disabled. That is a trade-off, not a general remedy for stutter.

Can precompilation prevent shader stutter?

Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) is a Windows 11 Direct3D 12 technology that prepares shader data ahead of time and delivers it for supported game, device, driver, and storefront combinations. Its purpose is to reduce compilation on the player’s device, but it is conditional rather than a universal Windows feature for every game or PC. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation explains the technology and its supported paths.

In an October 1, 2026 announcement, Microsoft said ASD was available for Gears of War: E-Day and was expanding to additional Windows devices powered by Intel, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm. That dated rollout statement does not establish support for a particular player’s game or system. Check the current title, device, and driver requirements rather than assuming ASD is available.

Microsoft has also reported a specific result: in its May 15, 2026 public-preview update, loading for Forza Horizon 6 took 4 seconds with ASD versus almost 1.5 minutes without it, described as a 95% time saving. Microsoft reported this comparison on an AMD Radeon RX 7600 and Ryzen 7 5800 system. It is an example for that game and hardware context, not a performance guarantee for other PCs or titles. What the evidence does—and does not—show

Microsoft DirectX Developer Blog author Wendy Ho wrote on March 12, 2026: “Long shader compilation times and in-game shader stutter for D3D12 apps are two of the biggest problems in PC gaming.” That is Microsoft’s characterization of the issue, not a measured estimate of how many players experience it. The cited sources explain mechanisms and include a particular loading comparison; they do not establish a population-wide prevalence figure.

The documented mechanism points to compilation timing and cache behavior as relevant clues, not to a universal hardware purchase. The sources do not show that replacing a GPU, CPU, monitor, or peripheral diagnoses or fixes every hitch.
