No. The Tapo D260 can record locally to a separately purchased microSD card, so you do not need Tapo Care for local recording. TP-Link lists a card capacity of up to 512 GB for the D260 V1; confirm the specification for your regional hardware version before buying. Tapo Care is optional cloud storage, not a prerequisite for using the doorbell.
How can the Tapo D260 store recordings?
TP-Link’s D260 V1 datasheet lists three storage routes. The microSD card is the straightforward choice if you want local recording without a cloud subscription.

For a microSD card, TP-Link’s general compatibility guidance recommends Class 10, U1, or V10 speed class or faster, and recommends High, Max, or Pro Endurance cards for security recording. Supported capacity and card compatibility can vary by model and hardware version, so check the D260’s current regional support information before purchasing.
What does Tapo Care add?
Tapo Care adds cloud event-video storage and related cloud services. Cloud copies may be useful if the doorbell is damaged, stolen, or offline, because they are not stored solely on the device. TP-Link’s UK D260 product page says, “Cloud storage via Tapo Care is optional, not required.” The D260 datasheet separately lists detection and local recording capabilities; a cloud subscription is not required for local recording.

Choose microSD if your priority is avoiding a recurring cloud fee and keeping recordings local. Consider Tapo Care if cloud access, its retention options, or a listed snapshot or AI feature matters more. You can also use local storage and separately decide whether cloud features justify their cost; the available storage choices are not an all-or-nothing requirement.
How much does Tapo Care cost?
TP-Link does not publish one fixed US price in its subscription pricing FAQ. It says prices can vary by region and promotions, and may differ between its website portal and the Tapo app. Sign in to both and compare the plan and billing cycle shown for your account before subscribing. No stable dollar amount should be assumed as the current D260 subscription cost.

What happens when a free trial or subscription ends?
The US Tapo Care FAQ says its 30-day free trial automatically becomes paid unless canceled before it ends. If you start a trial, check its end date and cancellation terms in the app so you can decide before billing begins.
The same FAQ describes a 14-day grace period after a plan expires or is canceled. During that period, it says you can view or download cloud videos, with downloads limited to 200 clips. After the grace period, cloud videos and related data are permanently deleted under the FAQ’s stated terms. Trial, cancellation, and retention rules can change, so confirm the current terms in the app before relying on cloud recordings.
