If stutter is caused by the GPU struggling to render a scene, start by lowering Global Illumination and Reflections quality in games that use Lumen. Then test a lower render resolution or the game’s supported upscaling option. Change one setting at a time and repeat the same scene so you can tell whether it helped. These adjustments may not fix brief hitches caused by shader or Pipeline State Object (PSO) compilation.
Which settings should you lower first?
Settings and labels vary by game, platform, and developer. Use the options your game actually exposes; not every Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) title uses Lumen or offers the same scalability controls.
- Lower Lumen Global Illumination and Reflections. If the game uses Lumen and provides separate quality controls, reduce each by one step and test again. Epic’s Lumen Performance Guide identifies Global Illumination and Reflections scalability groups as controls for Lumen quality. Lower settings trade image quality for rendering cost; they do not guarantee a particular frame-rate improvement.
- Try a lower render resolution or the game’s upscaler. If available, lower the internal or output resolution, or enable the supported upscaling mode. Unreal Engine can render below the target resolution and scale the image up. Epic describes Temporal Super Resolution (TSR) as a way Lumen can render at a lower internal resolution for higher-resolution output, including output approaching native 4K. Availability and menu names depend on the game. See Epic’s Scalability Reference and Lumen Technical Details.
- Test other exposed quality options individually. UE5 has other scalability controls, but there is no universal ranking of settings that will reduce stutter in every game. Change one option, revisit the same area, and compare smoothness and image quality before changing another.
How to tell whether a setting helped
Use a repeatable comparison rather than changing several options at once. Choose a scene where the stutter reliably occurs, make one adjustment, and replay or revisit that scene under similar conditions. Judge both frame-time smoothness and whether the visual trade-off is acceptable.
- If the scene becomes smoother after reducing a quality setting, rendering cost may have been part of the problem.
- If the same brief hitch remains despite lower quality, the cause may not be the graphics workload.
- Note whether the game exposes Lumen, TSR, or the particular quality group you want to test; a setting that is absent cannot be adjusted.
Epic describes scalability settings as a way to adjust feature quality for performance across platforms and hardware, but engine documentation cannot diagnose a specific PC or a game’s implementation. No universal benchmark or percentage improvement is established for these changes.

Why lower graphics settings may not stop a hitch
A brief pause can occur when a game compiles shaders or prepares a rendering state, rather than because its visual settings are too demanding. Epic’s UE 5.8 documentation states that “the act of compiling shaders can result in significant processing spikes, which in turn causes momentary but noticeable framerate hitches.” Lowering quality does not necessarily prevent those events.
One such rendering state is a Pipeline State Object (PSO). Epic’s UE 5.8 documentation says generating a new PSO on demand can take “100 or more milliseconds.” That describes a possible engine/API scenario, not the typical duration of every hitch. Epic also documents PSO precaching and caching as developer techniques to prepare rendering states and reduce compilation-related hitching. Precaching has memory and scheduling trade-offs, including background work that can contend with foreground work. Players generally cannot fix a game’s cache implementation through its graphics menu.

What the Lumen performance figures mean
Epic’s UE 5.8 Lumen Technical Details gives an approximate cost of 8 milliseconds for global illumination and reflections at the Epic scalability level on next-generation consoles, at 1080p internal resolution, in a context using TSR for output approaching native 4K. This is a platform- and setup-specific engine reference, not a performance promise for a PC or an individual game.
Epic’s Lumen Performance Guide also describes each lower scalability level as costing approximately half of the level above, with quality adjusted to that cost. This explains the design of Epic’s scalability levels; it is not a guarantee that a player will gain a particular amount of frame rate by moving down one level.

When to consider a GPU upgrade
Consider a graphics-card upgrade only after establishing that your workload is GPU-limited. Lowering rendering-heavy settings is a useful test, but a GPU upgrade is not an established fix for hitches caused by shader or PSO compilation. The cited Unreal Engine documentation does not identify a particular card or provide a universal hardware recommendation.
