What to check on a sea moss label
- Species and full formula: Check whether the label identifies Irish moss, or Chondrus crispus, and whether it also includes bladderwrack, kelp or other active ingredients. A combination product is not plain sea moss.
- Serving size and iodine: Look for the amount per serving and whether iodine is quantified. The seaweed’s name alone does not tell you its iodine content.
- Form and directions: Compare like with like. The sources do not establish a conversion between capsule, powder and gel servings.
- Batch-specific contaminant information: Look for current, credible results for relevant heavy metals tied to the product batch. The sources establish a potential concern, but do not verify testing for any particular current product.
Why iodine and contaminants matter
Sea moss contains iodine, and its amount can vary by product. A study of selected commercial products found that the tested Irish moss products did not exceed the iodine upper intake level; that finding does not establish the iodine content of every product sold today. The study of selected products is not a substitute for checking the label or current product-specific information.
Sea moss may also contain arsenic, lead, cadmium or mercury from the water where it grows. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland explains that accumulation depends on environmental factors and species. The word “sea moss” alone is not evidence that a product has low contaminant levels.

Who should seek individual advice?
Breastfeeding
NIH LactMed advises avoiding sea moss during breastfeeding unless iodine and heavy-metal levels have been shown to be low enough to be safe. See LactMed’s Sea Moss entry, revised February 15, 2026.
Pregnancy, medication use or medical conditions
The available sources do not provide a condition-specific dose or a complete interaction list, including for thyroid disease. What FDA status does—and does not—tell you
FDA says it is not authorized to approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed.
