Use one OpenAPI description as the shared contract for both readable REST API documentation and generated client libraries. A reliable workflow is to define and review the contract, validate it, render and inspect the docs, generate a client for the target language and runtime, then test and review the output before distributing it.
What OpenAPI provides
The OpenAPI Specification (OAS) defines a language-independent description of HTTP APIs so people and tools can discover and understand a service without inspecting its source code or network traffic. An OpenAPI description can be written in JSON or YAML and can describe paths, operations, parameters, request and response schemas, and security expectations. Separate tools can use it to render documentation or generate client libraries, server code, and tests.
The OpenAPI Initiative’s version index identifies OpenAPI Specification 3.2.1, published 10 September 2026, as the current version in the sources cited here. The index also lists 3.1.2, 3.0.4, and 2.0. Declare the version your API description uses, and check that each documentation and generation tool supports both that version and the specific features in your description. See the OpenAPI Specification and the official version index.
How to generate documentation and a client from an OpenAPI description
- Create or obtain the contract. Describe the API’s paths and operations, inputs, request and response bodies, authentication, and expected errors. Treat this description as a versioned, reviewed artifact with a clear owner; it must stay aligned with the service.
- Validate the description. OpenAPI Generator provides a
validatecommand for checking an input description and surfacing recommendations. A clean result means the validator reported no issues it recognizes; it does not prove the description is complete or that the running service conforms. The OpenAPI Initiative also notes that schema validation does not capture every specification violation. Consult the OpenAPI Generator usage guide and the specification version index. - Render human-facing documentation. Use a documentation renderer that supports your description’s version and features. Review the resulting pages as an API consumer: confirm that operation names, examples, authentication instructions, and error responses explain how to integrate. Valid structure alone does not make the docs useful.
- Choose the client target and generator settings. Select the target language and the runtime or HTTP library that fits the consuming application, then set the chosen generator’s options. Generator support and configuration differ, so confirm the relevant generator’s capabilities rather than assuming that every tool handles every feature the same way. The usage guide documents generator selection, configuration, and invocation methods.
- Customize sparingly and track changes. If defaults do not fit, OpenAPI Generator supports configuration and template customization. Keep custom templates and settings visible and version controlled so that regeneration does not unexpectedly discard project-specific changes. See the OpenAPI Generator usage guide.
- Make generation repeatable. Put validation and generation into the project’s build or CI process, pin the generator version and configuration, and review generated diffs when either changes. OpenAPI Generator documents build integrations including Gradle and Maven.
- Review and verify the output. Inspect generated documentation and code, run the consuming project’s checks, and decide which pieces need wrappers or hand-maintained implementation. Where appropriate, add tests that check the running API against the contract.
How to choose an OpenAPI generator
OpenAPI Generator and Swagger Codegen both describe capabilities for generating client libraries, server-side code or stubs, and documentation. The available project documentation establishes what each tool offers, but does not establish a universal winner or independent quality ranking. Compare them against the actual API and application rather than choosing on a broad claim of superiority.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Decision criterion | What to check |
|---|---|
| Specification compatibility | Does the tool support the OpenAPI version and the features used in your description? |
| Language and runtime | Can it generate for the required language and a suitable HTTP library or runtime? |
| Fit for the consuming codebase | Are the generated API and model shapes workable for the project’s conventions and integration needs? |
| Configuration and customization | Can you achieve the required output with documented options, and are any custom templates maintainable? |
| Build and maintenance | Can generation run reproducibly in your build or CI process, with tool versions and settings controlled? |
| Input security | Can the team review and trust the descriptions and templates being passed to the generator? |
See the OpenAPI Generator usage documentation and the Swagger Codegen project for their documented capabilities and options.
What validation and generated code do—and do not—guarantee
A validator can identify problems it knows how to detect, but a passing result is not proof that the contract is understandable, complete, or consistent with the implementation. The specification’s own version index cautions that schemas do not catch every violation. Combine tool validation with human review and, when appropriate, tests of the service against the contract.

Generated clients can reduce the need to hand-write repeated transport and model layers, but they cannot decide how the API should behave or remove the need to maintain its contract. Depending on the application, integration may still require decisions about configuration, error handling, retries, authentication, compatibility, and project-specific wrappers. Treat generated code as code to review and integrate, not as a finished application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Review untrusted inputs before generation
Swagger Codegen warns that an OpenAPI description from an untrusted source should be reviewed before generating clients, server stubs, or documentation because code injection may occur. Treat descriptions and generator templates as code-adjacent inputs, especially when they come from outside your organization or are fetched remotely. Read the project’s security warning and apply your normal review and build controls.
