SitePoint’s first installment is an architecture and application-flow guide for a small social-style posting feature: users can publish status updates, like or unlike posts, and comment. It explains the intended design rather than providing the complete implementation; the coding walkthrough is in part 2. The original article by Ashish Trivedi was published November 11, 2013, and updated November 11, 2024. Read the SitePoint article.
What part 1 covers—and what it does not
The tutorial is best read as a plan for the feature’s data architecture, post stream, and application flow. Its intended feature set is status posts, likes and unlikes, and comments. It is not, by itself, evidence that a complete social network has been built or that the approach is production-ready. The implementation is deferred to part 2.
The technology combination describes one way to connect a browser interface to server-side PHP and MongoDB. Do not assume the 2013 code works unchanged with current PHP, MongoDB, or jQuery versions: compatibility, security, and production readiness have not been established here.
How the posting flow fits together
At a high level, a user composes a status update in the browser; a client-side function sends the data to a PHP script using a jQuery AJAX POST; the PHP application handles the request and writes the post to MongoDB; and the interface can then reflect the result in the stream. The SitePoint description identifies this request path, but does not establish the precise request format, validation rules, response format, or error behavior.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For current jQuery behavior, consult the jQuery.ajax() API documentation. It describes request options such as URL, method, data, and expected response type, along with success and failure handling. Treat those as implementation details to define and test in your own application, rather than assuming the older tutorial’s snippets match current APIs.
Choose the current MongoDB PHP API
MongoDB distinguishes the low-level mongodb PHP extension from the higher-level MongoDB PHP Library. The extension provides driver and BSON capabilities; the library adds client, database, and collection objects for application code. MongoDB recommends using the library for most PHP applications. See the MongoDB PHP Library Manual for current guidance.

Connect to the deployment you actually use
The library connects through a MongoDBClient configured with a deployment-specific connection URI. MongoDB’s connection guide documents both Atlas and local deployment patterns. Use the URI for your own deployment; examples that contain placeholders must be replaced with actual values. Keep credentials and other sensitive connection details out of browser-side code.
Write the right number of documents
For a single post document, current library guidance uses Collection::insertOne(); for multiple documents, it uses Collection::insertMany(). Each document in a collection must have a unique _id. If the application does not provide one, the driver can generate an ObjectId. See MongoDB’s insert documents guide for the current API and examples.

Decisions to make before implementing likes and comments
The tutorial names likes/unlikes and comments as desired features, but the available description does not specify their schema or business rules. Before writing handlers, decide how your application will represent these relationships and enforce their behavior. In particular, define:
- How a post is associated with its author and how the post stream is ordered.
- How the application determines who is allowed to create, edit, or remove a post.
- Whether one user may like a given post only once, and how an unlike changes that state.
- How comments are associated with a post, attributed to an author, and ordered.
- What validation, authorization, and error responses apply to each browser request.
These are design questions, not schema facts established by the tutorial description. Choose rules that fit your application, then verify them in both the PHP request handling and the database operations.

Use the tutorial as a starting point, not a current-version recipe
For a new implementation, use the current MongoDB PHP Library manual for connection and write APIs, and the jQuery API documentation for AJAX behavior. Check the PHP, extension, library, and jQuery versions in your environment before adapting older examples. The supplied material establishes the tutorial’s intended flow and feature scope; it does not verify that its original code is compatible with current software or suitable for production use.
