If a Linux command launches the wrong program or version, first check how your active shell resolves that command. In Bash, an alias can rewrite the command before executable lookup; Bash may also use a remembered command location, and external programs are found through the ordered directories in $PATH. Diagnose those layers before changing startup files or uninstalling software.

How Linux decides what a typed command means

There is no single Linux-wide rule for aliases: command interpretation depends on the shell you are using. The details below are for Bash. Other shells have their own rules and inspection commands, so do not assume Bash instructions apply unchanged to Zsh or another shell.

In Bash, an alias can substitute text for a command word before an external executable is considered. If no alias changes the command, Bash may resolve it as a function or builtin, or find an external executable. For external commands, Bash can use its command hash table; its manual says it performs a full search of $PATH only when the command is not found in that table. When multiple executable files have the same name, the selected path therefore depends on the active shell’s resolution and lookup state, not simply on which copy you installed most recently.

Diagnose the conflict in Bash

1. Identify the active shell and command type

Check which shell is interpreting the command, then use that shell’s built-in inspection facilities to determine whether the name resolves as an alias, function, builtin, or external file. A check that only lists executable paths can miss an alias that rewrites the command first. Do not apply the Bash-specific steps below to another shell without checking its documentation.

2. Inspect aliases and functions

In Bash, use alias name to inspect a particular alias, or alias to list definitions. If an alias is unintended, remove it from the current shell with unalias name. Then search the relevant Bash startup configuration for the definition and remove or edit it there; otherwise it can return in a new session.

Bash expands aliases when it reads input, rather than when it executes a command. As a result, changing an alias on the same already-parsed line or within compound input may not affect commands Bash has already read; test the change in subsequent input. Bash ordinarily does not expand aliases in noninteractive shells unless the expand_aliases option is enabled. The GNU Bash Reference Manual notes: “For almost every purpose, shell functions are preferable to aliases.” GNU Bash Reference Manual: Aliases.

3. Check PATH order and Bash’s lookup state

Read the ordered entries in $PATH and identify which directories contain an executable with the disputed name. For external commands, an earlier applicable directory can take precedence over a later one. But Bash’s remembered command location can also matter: according to the GNU Bash Reference Manual, Bash performs a full PATH search only if the command is not found in its hash table. Therefore, a PATH edit by itself may not explain what an already-running shell selects. Inspect the active shell’s resolution after a change, and use a fresh shell when checking whether startup configuration produces the intended result.

4. Compare duplicate executable files before removing anything

If inspection reveals multiple external files with the same name, compare them using these practical checks:

  • Full path: identifies which file the shell is selecting and where the other copies are located.
  • Version or behavior: run the intended executable by its explicit path and check its version or help output to see whether it is the expected build.
  • Installation source: determine whether each file came from a distribution package manager, a language-specific installer, a manual installation, or another mechanism. This helps identify the appropriate update or removal route.

Prefer an explicit path for a one-off verification. Do not remove a duplicate until you know which installation source owns it: cleanup steps differ by source, and there is no safe universal removal command for every installation method.

Apply the fix and verify it

  1. Make only the change indicated by the diagnosis: remove an unwanted alias, correct the PATH configuration, or manage a duplicate through its identified installation source.
  2. Open a fresh Bash shell after changing startup configuration, or otherwise inspect command resolution again in the active shell.
  3. Run the intended tool and check its version or help output. If needed, invoke the executable by its full path to verify a particular copy independently of normal command lookup.

If the selected program is still unexpected, return to command inspection and check each layer again rather than assuming the last configuration change fixed it.

Why there is no universal cleanup command

An alias is shell configuration, PATH order is environment configuration, and duplicate executables are installed files. They are different causes and need different remedies. The relevant distribution package manager, language-specific installer, or manual installation determines how an executable should be updated or removed; identify that source before taking action.
