Thunderbolt 4 sets a more specific baseline: Intel lists a minimum 40 Gbps PC speed, support for two 4K displays, and 32 Gbps PCIe data. USB4 products vary; Intel’s comparison lists a 20 Gbps minimum PC speed and one display with no minimum bandwidth, while some USB4 products offer higher capabilities. Check the exact specifications for the computer, dock or peripheral, and cable before buying.
What is the difference between Thunderbolt 4 and USB4?
USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 are related, but their names do not promise the same feature set. USB-IF says USB4 is based on the Thunderbolt protocol specification contributed by Intel. USB4 is a broad specification with products that can offer different capabilities; Thunderbolt 4 defines a clearer minimum set of capabilities for certified computers, accessories, and cables.
Intel’s comparison gives the following minimums. These are specification requirements, not independent performance test results.
| Capability | Thunderbolt 4 | USB4 | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum PC speed | 40 Gbps | 20 Gbps | The actual computer, accessory, and cable rates; USB4 products can support more than the listed minimum. |
| Display baseline | Two 4K displays | One display, with no minimum bandwidth stated | Number of displays, resolution, refresh rate, and the computer-and-dock configuration. |
| PCIe data | 32 Gbps | Intel’s comparison does not state an equivalent USB4 minimum | Whether the specific computer and external device support the PCIe connection and performance you need. |
| Certification | Intel lists certification as mandatory for computers, accessories, and cables. | Capabilities vary by product; check its stated specifications and certification. | The product’s actual certification and full specifications. |
| Cable information | Intel identifies universal 40 Gbps cables up to 2 meters. | Link capability depends on the devices and cable. | The cable’s rating and length, as well as the host and peripheral capabilities. |
USB4 is not limited to 20 Gbps. USB-IF lists USB4 Specification v2.0, published April 2, 2026, and describes USB4 operation up to 80 Gbps over certified cables. Look for an explicit speed label—such as USB4 20Gbps or USB4 40Gbps—rather than treating “USB4” as a speed guarantee.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which one should you choose?
Choose USB4 when the exact products meet your needs
USB4 may be sufficient for a monitor and everyday peripherals if the computer and accessory specify the speed, display support, and other features your setup requires. Confirm the specifications for each part of the connection instead of assuming all USB4 products implement the same capabilities.
Choose Thunderbolt 4 for a more predictable minimum feature set
Thunderbolt 4 is the clearer choice if you want its defined baseline of two 4K displays, 32 Gbps PCIe data, and 40 Gbps minimum PC speed. Certification requirements can also make it easier to identify products built to that standard. These minimums do not replace checking a particular computer’s configuration, display support, or accessory requirements.

Check carefully for external storage or PCIe devices
For a fast external drive, enclosure, or other PCIe-connected device, verify PCIe tunneling support and the product-specific performance for both the computer and the device. A USB-C port—or the USB4 name alone—does not establish that those capabilities are present.
Will USB4 work with a Thunderbolt dock?
USB-IF describes USB4 compatibility with Thunderbolt 3 hosts and devices, as well as USB 3.2 and USB 2.0 hosts and devices. When devices connect, capabilities scale to the best capability they share. That does not mean a USB4 computer supports every Thunderbolt 4 feature, or that every Thunderbolt dock will provide its full feature set with every USB4 computer.

Check the computer and dock documentation for the specific connection you plan to use, including display count, resolution, refresh rate, data speed, and any PCIe devices. If the dock relies on a Thunderbolt feature, confirm that the computer supports that feature rather than relying on the USB-C shape of the port.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need a Thunderbolt 4 cable?
Only if you need the capability the cable is rated to carry and the connected devices support it. Intel identifies universal 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 4 cables up to 2 meters. For USB4, verify the cable’s stated rating and length alongside the computer and peripheral specifications. A cable cannot add speed or features that a host or accessory lacks, and not every USB-C cable supports the same data rate, display capability, or charging level.

How to check a complete setup before buying
- Check the computer’s port specifications. Find the exact port capabilities in the computer maker’s documentation; do not infer them from the USB-C connector shape.
- Check the dock or peripheral requirements. Confirm its supported connection standard, data speed, display configuration, and any PCIe support needed for your setup.
- Check the cable rating and length. Match the cable to the speed and features you need; verify certification where relevant.
- Compare the shared capabilities. Ensure the host, accessory, and cable all support the intended configuration. For displays, check the computer’s and dock’s supported number of screens, resolution, and refresh rate.
