Observe from a distance, stay quiet, and let the animals choose where to go. Do not approach, touch, feed, attract, or unnecessarily light crocodiles or bats. There is no single viewing distance that applies to every species and location: follow local rules, and back away if an animal reacts to you. Binoculars or camera zoom let you see more without closing the gap.
Start with distance and the animal’s behavior
Before visiting, check local signs, park rules, and wildlife-authority guidance. Viewing distances and legal protections vary by place. The U.S. National Park Service puts the practical test plainly: “In general, if animals react to your presence you are too close.” Step back rather than waiting to see whether the animal settles, and use binoculars or zoom instead of moving nearer. - Stay quiet and do not use calls, food, or other attractants to draw wildlife closer.
- Do not block an animal’s route or cause it to change direction to avoid you.
- Keep pets controlled; California’s bat guidance recommends confining or leashing pets.
- Choose a viewing spot that does not put you near a nest, roost, or young animals.
How to watch crocodiles safely
On or near the water
Crocodiles demand especially conservative choices around water. In Queensland, recreational boating guidance says to keep arms and legs inside the boat, use the vessel as a barrier, avoid kayaks, paddleboards, and other small craft in crocodile habitat, and never bring a boat within 10 metres of a wild crocodile. Never feed, touch, provoke, pursue, or try to attract a crocodile. Do not put yourself or a vessel between it and its route to water. Keep noise and wake low, and never throw food or objects to improve a photograph. If a lawful, well-run local viewing option exists, follow current local rules and the operator’s applicable code.

Queensland’s commercial crocodile-viewing code gives specific operating standards for commercial operators; they are not general visitor rules. Under version 1.01, effective 22 August 2020, the code bars attracting or touching crocodiles, blocking escape routes, and pursuing swimming animals. It directs operators to idle in neutral if a crocodile is in a moving vessel’s path or approaches, and to stop or withdraw if its behavior changes. Queensland commercial crocodile-viewing code

How to watch bats without disturbing a roost
Watch quietly from a respectful distance, and do not enter or approach a roost to get a better view. There is no universal bat-viewing distance established by the guidance cited here, so use the local authority’s rules and increase distance if bats react to you. California Department of Fish and Wildlife says bats should be handled only by trained professionals using personal protective equipment. Its guidance also notes that artificial light can disturb nocturnal animals and alter insect behavior; avoid unnecessary lighting rather than assuming a particular flashlight brightness or exposure time is safe. Legal protections depend on where you are. In the UK, bats and their breeding and resting sites are protected; prohibited actions include intentional or reckless disturbance in a shelter and damaging or destroying a breeding or resting place. If you find a bat that may be injured or ill
Do not pick it up. Contact local wildlife authorities for help. If a person or pet has had direct contact, seek advice from the relevant local wildlife or public-health authority. California’s guidance says to notify the local health department after a bite, scratch, or saliva exposure.

Binoculars and camera zoom are useful because they improve the view without requiring a closer approach. Equipment is not a reason to cross a boundary, shine a beam at an animal, use flash, or change its behavior. Choose a viewing spot or tour by its impact
When comparing possible sites, tours, or ways to observe wildlife, look beyond how close the view might be. Prefer options that keep a clear escape route, minimize noise, wake, and artificial light, avoid sensitive roosts and nesting areas, and follow current local rules and operator codes. A view that requires animals to alter their behavior is too intrusive.
