To troubleshoot DLSS artifacts, first identify which DLSS feature is active, then compare the image with that feature off and on while keeping other settings unchanged. Soft detail may respond to a different Super Resolution mode or model; flicker, ghost trails, and unstable UI can instead involve Ray Reconstruction, Frame Generation, or a game’s rendering integration. There is no single setting that fixes every title.
Know which DLSS feature you are troubleshooting
DLSS is a group of rendering features, not one switch. Super Resolution reconstructs an image from a lower-resolution input. Ray Reconstruction processes ray-traced or path-traced effects in place of traditional hand-tuned denoisers. Frame Generation synthesizes additional frames between rendered frames. A game can expose one or more of these features, so note which are actually enabled before changing settings.
Feature compatibility also differs by GPU generation. NVIDIA lists Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction for GeForce RTX 20 through 50 Series, while its standard Frame Generation support is listed for RTX 40 and 50 Series. Check compatibility for the specific feature and game rather than assuming that support for one DLSS feature means support for all of them. NVIDIA’s DLSS overview describes the feature family and supported GPU generations.
Start with a controlled A/B comparison
- Record the setup. Note the game, GPU, driver and NVIDIA app versions, display resolution, active DLSS component, selected mode or preset, and whether Ray Reconstruction or Frame Generation is enabled.
- Capture the artifact. Use the same scene and camera position if possible. Observe the affected detail while stationary and while moving; ghosting and flicker often become apparent only in motion.
- Disable only the suspect feature. Keep resolution and other graphics settings constant, compare the result, and then re-enable that feature. If several DLSS components are active, test one at a time rather than changing them all together.
- Change one related setting at a time. This helps distinguish a feature-specific effect from a general graphics-setting change. Disabling a feature is a diagnostic comparison, not automatically the best permanent choice.
If the image changes when one component is toggled, you have narrowed down where to investigate; that comparison alone does not establish the underlying cause.

If fine detail looks soft or smeared
Compare Super Resolution modes
When Super Resolution is active, compare the modes offered by the game. A mode using a higher-resolution input may preserve more fine detail, but it can reduce performance headroom. Judge the image and frame rate on your own system; there is no universally best mode for every game, resolution, or GPU.
Check the NVIDIA app’s per-game options
NVIDIA’s app provides per-game DLSS model overrides and Super Resolution scaling customization in supported titles. Where those options are available, compare them with the game’s current setting and change only one option at a time. The available controls depend on the game, its in-game setting, app and driver versions, and hardware, so labels and options may differ. See NVIDIA’s announcement of DLSS overrides in the NVIDIA app.

Check Ray Reconstruction separately
In a ray-traced or path-traced game, compare the image with Ray Reconstruction disabled and enabled if the title offers the choice. It replaces traditional denoisers, but the result depends on the game’s implementation. In NVIDIA’s 2026 announcement, the company said its DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction model has 35% more compute capability than the prior model and processes 20% more parameters while maintaining similar performance. Those are NVIDIA’s model comparisons, not guarantees of a particular game looking sharper or running faster. NVIDIA’s 2026 Ray Reconstruction announcement provides the company’s description.
If the image flickers
First compare Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and Frame Generation independently where the game allows it. If flicker remains only in one title after those checks, the cause may be how that game supplies rendering data to DLSS, rather than a setting you can correct yourself.

NVIDIA’s developer integration guidance states: “Incorrect or missing jitter can lead to poor anti-aliasing and increased flickering.” Jitter is part of the data a game renderer must provide for reconstruction. Players generally cannot repair a missing or incorrect engine input through an ordinary graphics menu; record the settings and report a persistent, title-specific issue to the game developer. NVIDIA’s Streamline integration guidance explains this developer-side issue.
If moving objects leave trails or the UI looks unstable
Test Frame Generation on its own, then compare with the game’s motion-blur setting reduced or disabled. NVIDIA’s Frame Generation integration checklist identifies missing or incorrect inputs as potential causes of blurry objects, increased flickering, and unstable HUD or UI; inaccurate inputs can increase ghosting. It also warns that excessive motion blur can create image-quality artifacts with generated frames. These are possible integration causes, not proof that any one explains a particular game’s ghosting. NVIDIA’s Frame Generation checklist describes the required inputs and related artifacts.

Use the symptom to guide the next check

For blurry, smudged, or low-resolution textures specifically when Ray Reconstruction is active, NVIDIA’s developer guidance points to missing mip-map bias as a possible integration problem. Mip-map bias is not normally a player-facing repair control. NVIDIA’s Streamline integration guidance covers jitter and texture-related integration requirements.
When a game-side fix may be needed
DLSS relies on data supplied by the game renderer, including motion vectors, jitter, exposure, mip bias, and other buffers. A player can isolate a feature or change exposed graphics options, but generally cannot correct faulty engine inputs directly. If the artifact survives a controlled comparison and appears in one title, send the developer a short clip and the game, GPU, driver/app version, resolution, and active DLSS settings. This gives the developer reproducible context without presuming which engine input is at fault.
