For the best balance, start with DLSS Super Resolution set to Quality, then switch to Balanced if you need more performance. Try Performance or Ultra Performance only when the additional speed is worth the greater loss of rendered detail. The right choice depends on the game, GPU, output resolution, and active DLSS model—so compare modes in the same scene rather than treating any one setting as universally best.
Choose a DLSS Super Resolution mode
Super Resolution renders the game at a lower input resolution and reconstructs an image at your display’s output resolution. NVIDIA describes the feature as using AI to output higher-resolution frames from a lower-resolution input (NVIDIA DLSS technology). Lower input resolutions can ease rendering demands, but they also give the reconstruction less image detail to work with.
| Mode | When to try it | NVIDIA input-resolution example |
|---|---|---|
| Quality | Start here when image clarity matters most or your frame rate is already close to target. | 67% of output resolution, in NVIDIA’s published mode example (NVIDIA app guidance). |
| Balanced | Try it when Quality does not meet your performance target; inspect the result in the game you play. | Not stated in the cited NVIDIA app guidance. |
| Performance | Use when you need a larger performance improvement, particularly at high output resolutions. | 50% of output resolution, in NVIDIA’s published mode example (NVIDIA app guidance). |
| Ultra Performance | Reserve it for situations where performance takes priority, especially with high-resolution output; check fine detail carefully. | 33% of output resolution, in NVIDIA’s published mode example (NVIDIA app guidance). |
| DLAA | Consider it when image quality is the priority and you have performance headroom. | Native-resolution anti-aliasing rather than a performance-oriented upscaling mode (NVIDIA DLSS technology). |
The percentages are NVIDIA mode examples, not independent benchmarks or promises of a particular frame rate. Balanced’s input scale is not stated in the cited guidance; do not infer it from the other entries. Actual image quality and performance vary by game and implementation.
Set a target and compare modes in the same scene
- Choose a repeatable scene. Use the same location, camera angle, movement, and graphics settings for each comparison.
- Keep the output resolution fixed. A change in display or output resolution makes it harder to isolate the effect of DLSS mode.
- Start with Quality and check performance. If it meets your frame-rate target and looks good in motion, there may be no reason to use a more aggressive mode.
- Try Balanced, then Performance if needed. Compare each against your target, looking for a worthwhile performance difference without unacceptable image degradation.
- Inspect motion and fine detail. Look for ghosting, shimmering, lost texture detail, or unstable edges while panning and moving—not only in a still screenshot.
- Use Ultra Performance selectively. Check whether its performance advantage is worth the visible compromises in the scenes you care about.
There is no universal frame-rate gain to expect from switching modes: NVIDIA’s cited guidance provides input-resolution examples, not a game-, GPU-, resolution-, and settings-specific benchmark.

Use resolution recommendations as starting points, not rules
NVIDIA’s Fortnite setup guide recommends Performance at 4K, Balanced at 2560×1440, and Quality at 1920×1080 (NVIDIA’s Fortnite setup guide). That is a concrete recommendation for one game, not proof that those modes are optimal at those resolutions in every title or on every GPU. Use it as a starting point, then judge image quality and performance in your own game.
Tune Super Resolution separately from other DLSS features
DLSS includes distinct features, and they do not serve the same purpose. Super Resolution is the control to tune first for the upscaling image-quality and performance tradeoff. Frame Generation creates additional frames; evaluate it separately, including how responsive the game feels and whether it supports NVIDIA Reflex. Ray Reconstruction targets ray-traced image reconstruction, while DLAA provides anti-aliasing at native resolution (NVIDIA DLSS technology; NVIDIA DLSS developer information).

Enabling Frame Generation does not answer whether a Super Resolution mode looks right: judge those controls independently. If you change multiple DLSS features at once, it becomes harder to tell which change affected image quality or responsiveness.
Use custom scaling or model overrides only when needed
In supported games, NVIDIA app overrides can expose DLSS presets or custom input-resolution scaling. NVIDIA describes custom values between 33% and 100%; this can fill a gap when the standard modes do not give the compromise you want. Availability depends on game and app support, and the resulting image still needs to be checked in the target game (NVIDIA app guidance).

NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 guidance describes Recommended model behavior as Preset M for Performance, Preset L for Ultra Performance, and Preset K for remaining modes. It also says RTX 20 and 30 Series GPUs lack native FP8 support, so Models M and L may have a heavier performance impact on those generations. Model behavior and override availability can change with drivers, app releases, and game support. Check the NVIDIA app’s DLSS statistics overlay to verify which model is active rather than assuming a particular preset is in use (NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 guidance).

DLSS requires supported GeForce RTX hardware and game support; the available DLSS features and controls can differ by title. If your current system does not support DLSS, a compatible GeForce RTX graphics card is the relevant hardware path. If your hardware already supports DLSS in the game, you do not need to buy anything to follow these settings recommendations (NVIDIA DLSS technology; NVIDIA Fortnite setup guide).
