256GB may suit a cloud-oriented routine

512GB is more useful for large offline libraries
Consider 512GB if you want more room for downloaded video, large games, or files that need to stay on the device. The manufacturers’ listed US prices make that capacity step $200 for either model. Whether it is worth paying depends on the amount of local storage you need and the value you place on avoiding regular cleanup or cloud dependence.
Can cloud photo storage free up phone space?
iPhone: iCloud Photos optimization
Apple’s photo and video storage guidance says that with Optimize Storage enabled, full-resolution photos and videos are kept in iCloud, while space-saving copies are kept on the device as needed. This can reduce local photo storage use, but it does not increase the phone’s built-in capacity or provide more room for apps and offline downloads. Access to the full-resolution files depends on iCloud and a network connection when those files are not stored locally.

Apple says a new iCloud account includes 5GB of storage and users can upgrade with iCloud+. That quota is separate from the phone’s capacity; include any subscription you actually need when weighing longer-term cost.
Galaxy: Google Account storage
Google’s Google Photos storage guidance explains that Google Account storage is shared across services such as Photos, Drive, and Gmail. Backing up photos may help manage local storage, but the account quota is not extra built-in Galaxy storage. Check how much account space is available for your existing Google services before relying on it.

How to decide which is better value for you
- Compare matching capacities. Use the current unlocked price for the iPhone 17 and Galaxy S26 at 256GB or at 512GB rather than comparing different configurations.
- Apply your real purchase price. Check eligible trade-ins or carrier and retailer offers, and account for taxes. These can change the out-of-pocket comparison; the listed prices above do not include them.
- Identify what is filling your phone. Photos that you back up, offline video, games, and other local files create different storage needs. Cloud photo optimization may help with backed-up photos, but it cannot replace local room for content you want available offline.

- Factor in the ecosystem you already use. Existing devices, accounts, and storage habits can make one cloud option more convenient, but convenience does not change the phone’s built-in capacity.
