Choose an MDR provider by verifying that it supplies around-the-clock human investigation and hunting, covers the systems and telemetry your organization depends on, and can take clearly authorized containment actions—not merely forward alerts. Before signing, review its written service scope, response and approval matrix, integration requirements, sample incident report, and commercial terms.

What an MDR service should do

Managed detection and response (MDR) is a remotely delivered security operations service. Gartner’s overview describes it as supporting rapid detection, analysis, investigation, and response, including threat disruption and containment. Gartner identifies a provider-operated technology stack and analyst team that conducts threat hunting and incident management as part of the model. Gartner’s definition lists three mandatory features:

  • A provider-hosted and provider-operated stack coordinating detection and response remotely.
  • 24/7 staffing with skills in monitoring, detection, hunting, threat intelligence, and remote response.
  • Immediate remote mitigation, investigation, and containment beyond alerting, with customer-preapproved actions.

Gartner’s 9 September 2026 Market Guide abstract describes the category as “remotely delivered, AI-augmented, human-led, turnkey, modern SOC functions” focused on attack disruption and containment. That is market framing, not proof that providers have equivalent capabilities or that any one service fits every organization. Gartner Market Guide abstract

The practical distinction is what happens after an alert. A monitoring product or service that only sends notifications may leave your team to investigate and contain the incident. Ask providers to demonstrate the path from detection through investigation, authorized response, escalation, and customer remediation.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Match the service to your environment

Start with the systems and data sources the provider will actually monitor. Gartner lists endpoint, network, log, and cloud coverage as common MDR areas; identity, email and collaboration, SaaS, IoT, and operational technology (OT) are also common areas. The provider’s specific support and prerequisites still need to be verified.

  • List the business-critical systems and security tools already deployed.
  • Identify the telemetry sources you expect the service to ingest, including identity, email, and cloud sources where relevant.
  • Ask which sources are mandatory, included, optional, or unsupported, and what onboarding work or exclusions apply.
  • Request a source and integration matrix tied to your actual environment, rather than relying on a general compatibility claim.

Gartner describes both provider-built technology stacks and integrated commercial-tool models, with third-party integrations as a common feature. That does not establish compatibility with your particular products: validate the named integrations and, if possible, see them demonstrated using tools relevant to your environment.

Agree on response authority before comparing providers

Remote containment is central to the MDR model, but it must fit your operational risk and approval process. Decide in advance which actions may be taken immediately, which require your approval, and who the provider should contact at each severity level.

  • Ask whether the provider can quarantine an endpoint or take other remote actions relevant to your environment.
  • Separate preapproved actions from actions that require customer sign-off.
  • Set escalation contacts, severity definitions, and an escalation process for unavailable contacts or urgent incidents.
  • Request the response playbook and approval matrix in writing, then check that they match the contract and your internal procedures.

A provider’s promise to “respond” is not enough to establish what it is authorized or equipped to do. Compare the documented authority, approval triggers, and escalation path—not just the service description.

Test the quality of investigation and reporting

Ask each candidate to walk through a representative incident from initial detection to customer remediation. Request a redacted incident ticket and check whether it explains the incident’s objectives, likely impact, degree of success, and recommended remediation. Gartner describes these as elements of incident tickets.

  • Does the ticket make clear what was detected and what evidence supports the finding?
  • Does it explain the likely attacker objective, impact, and what appears to have succeeded?
  • Are the provider’s actions, customer approvals, and outstanding steps understandable?
  • Are remediation steps specific enough for your team to act on?

Also ask what threat hunting is included: its scope and cadence, whether you can request a hypothesis-driven investigation, and how findings are reported. A sample hunt output can help establish what “hunting” means in that provider’s service rather than leaving the term undefined.

Check whether deeper incident response is included

Detection, investigation, and remote containment do not necessarily include every form of digital forensics and incident response (DFIR). Gartner identifies DFIR retainer capability as a common MDR feature, not a universal inclusion. Ask whether deeper DFIR work is part of the service, separately contracted, or available through a retainer; clarify whether specialists can assist remotely or on site and what the applicable terms are.

Area Questions to ask Evidence to request
Human operations Is coverage staffed 24/7? Who investigates and hunts? How does the provider use your risk context? Coverage schedule, analyst workflow, and sample investigation report.
Telemetry and scope Which endpoint, network, log, cloud, identity, email, SaaS, IoT, and OT sources are supported? What is required? Source and integration matrix, onboarding requirements, and exclusions.
Response authority What remote actions can the provider take? Which are preapproved and which require sign-off? Response playbook, approval matrix, and escalation contacts and process.
Technology and integrations Is the stack provider-owned, built from commercial tools, or mixed? Does it support your existing tools? Named integration list and a demonstration using relevant parts of your environment.
Investigation and reporting Does the ticket explain objectives, likely impact, what succeeded, and remedial actions? Redacted incident ticket and reporting cadence.
Threat hunting What routine hunts are included? Can you request a hypothesis-driven investigation? Hunt scope, cadence, request process, and example findings.
Incident-response depth Is deeper DFIR included or separately retained? Can specialists respond remotely or on site? Contract scope and retainer terms.
Commercial and geographic fit Where is the service available? What is included in the fee, and how are additional sources or services priced? Written quote and service terms.

For example, the CIS MDR service page says the service is available to U.S. organizations and directs prospective customers to contact CIS about pricing. Those details describe that offering only; they are not market-wide availability or pricing norms.

Review the contract and operating terms

There is no universal contract structure or price established for MDR. Compare each provider’s written terms for the practical limits and obligations that affect your team:

  • Coverage hours and the incident escalation expectations.
  • Included telemetry sources, onboarding responsibilities, and any investigation or incident-volume limits.
  • Response authority, required customer approvals, and the process for reaching your contacts.
  • What the fee covers, how added sources or services are charged, and any separate DFIR retainer terms.

Resolve ambiguity in the written scope rather than assuming a feature mentioned in a demonstration or marketing description is included in the service.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
