Most AI APIs charge for usage—often by the tokens a model reads and generates—while a consumer subscription, prepaid credits, and a spending cap are separate arrangements. A rate limit controls how quickly you can send requests; a spend limit controls how much usage can accumulate. Your actual bill depends on the model, what you send and receive, and any applicable tool or media charges.

How much does an AI API cost?

There is no single price for “an AI API.” Providers publish rates by model and billable category, commonly as a price per one million tokens. Input and output may have different rates, and cached input, long contexts, audio or video, batch processing, and tools can change the calculation. Check the current price for the exact model and service tier you plan to use: OpenAI API pricing, Gemini API pricing.

A quoted per-token rate alone is not enough to compare providers. A workload with long prompts and short answers has a different cost profile from one with short prompts and long generated answers. Model capability, token mix, modalities, tools, and service tier also need to match before a price comparison is meaningful.

How are AI API tokens billed?

A token is a unit of text or other model input and output; it is not necessarily the same as a word. The provider counts billable categories for a request, applies the selected model’s rates, and adds applicable separate charges. OpenAI documents this calculation as input tokens multiplied by the input rate, cached input tokens multiplied by the cached-input rate, and output tokens multiplied by the output rate, with each token quantity divided by one million when rates are listed per million tokens. See the OpenAI token-based rate card.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Price tables may distinguish categories beyond ordinary input and output. For example, cached input can carry a different rate; some models or services list separate long-context, reasoning, audio/video, batch, or tool charges. OpenAI notes that built-in tool tokens are billed at the selected model’s token rates, while some other tool or session charges are separate. Gemini also lists rates by modality and gives time-based equivalents for some audio and video pricing. Read the unit and conditions attached to each line rather than treating every charge as a generic per-token fee.

Estimate a representative workload

  1. Select the exact model and service tier. Use the provider’s live price page, not a general estimate for an entire brand.
  2. Measure representative requests. Estimate average input and output tokens from the prompts and responses your application will actually use. Include system instructions and conversation history where applicable.
  3. Price each category separately. Multiply input and output tokens by their respective rates; calculate cached input separately if the provider lists it.
  4. Add non-token charges. Include applicable tools, audio or video, storage, session, or other fees.
  5. Scale to expected traffic. Multiply by expected requests, allowing for retries and repeated agent steps if your application uses them.
  6. Compare the estimate with real usage. Run a limited pilot, inspect account usage, and revise the token and traffic assumptions.

Does a monthly AI subscription include API access?

Do not assume that paying for a consumer AI app subscription pays for API calls. An app plan and API usage are separate products with their own billing terms; API access may be metered, paid with prepaid credits, or invoiced based on usage. Check the API billing page for the account you will use rather than using an app subscription price as an API cost estimate. See OpenAI API pricing and Claude API billing.

Payment arrangements differ by provider and account. Anthropic’s help article, dated August 19, 2026, says most organizations pay for API usage with prepaid credits, while organizations with an invoicing arrangement are billed monthly. It also says purchased credits expire one year after purchase. Google documents a free Gemini API tier for certain models and usage, as well as paid tiers; its billing page says some paid-tier setups require a minimum $5 prepayment. These are provider-specific terms, not a universal API billing rule, and eligibility or setup requirements can vary.

What is the difference between a rate limit and a spend limit?

They constrain different things. A rate limit controls how much traffic can pass over a time window; a spend limit controls accumulated usage or charges. An alert warns you that usage is approaching a threshold, while an enforced hard limit may stop affected requests.

  • Requests per time window: the number of API calls allowed during a period.
  • Tokens per time window: the amount of token throughput allowed during a period.
  • Spend or usage cap: a longer-term ceiling set for an account or project.
  • Alert versus enforcement: an alert can notify you while traffic continues; a hard limit can block further usage once reached.

OpenAI’s rate-limit documentation describes response headers that report remaining request or token quantities and reset times. It distinguishes spend alerts, which do not stop API traffic, from hard spend limits, which can cause affected requests to return a 429 error. Review the OpenAI rate-limit guide for the controls and headers.

Why can’t you rely on a published quota or free tier?

Limits can depend on the organization, project, billing account, usage tier, and provider policy. OpenAI directs organizations to their account’s Limits page for applicable limits; examples in documentation should not be treated as guaranteed quotas for every account. Google says Gemini rate limits are tied to a project’s usage tier and that billing-account caps are determined at the billing-account level. Its documentation states: “Tiers, rate limits, and billing account caps are all determined at the billing account level.” Check the live console and the relevant project’s settings before planning production traffic. How do you keep an API bill predictable?

  • Choose a model that fits the task, and confirm the current rates and billable categories before deployment.
  • Limit unnecessary prompt history and output length; both can affect usage.
  • Use cached input or batch processing only where the provider’s pricing and your application’s requirements make them appropriate.
  • Monitor token and request usage during a pilot, then compare observed usage with the estimate.
  • Set alerts for visibility and a hard spend cap where available if you need enforcement; do not confuse an alert with a block.
  • Check rate limits separately from spending controls so that a low bill does not mask a throughput constraint.
