It is database technology—not an ERP application—and SAP HANA Cloud is a cloud service built on the HANA database engine.
What does SAP HANA do?
SAP describes HANA as an in-memory database and platform. Its database services store and access data using an in-memory, column-oriented design, and support online transaction processing (OLTP) alongside online analytical processing (OLAP). In practical terms, that means a HANA system can handle application transactions as well as queries that analyze data, rather than requiring those jobs to use separate database systems in every scenario. HANA also includes platform capabilities for developing and running custom applications and managing their lifecycle. SAP’s developer guide describes its core as an in-memory relational database management system and highlights a design principle of minimizing data movement by processing data near memory and CPUs. “In-memory” describes the design emphasis on processing data in main memory; it does not mean that durable storage, backups, or recovery planning are unnecessary. Nor does the architecture alone establish how fast a particular workload will run: performance depends on the workload and system configuration, so broad speed guarantees are not warranted.

Is SAP HANA a database or an ERP system?
SAP HANA is database and platform technology, not an ERP application by itself. SAP business applications can use HANA as their database foundation, and HANA also provides services for custom applications. How can SAP HANA be deployed?
SAP documents on-premises, cloud, and hybrid deployment possibilities. The appropriate choice depends on the workload, desired control, infrastructure and operating capacity, and the applicable licensing and feature scope. How is SAP HANA Cloud different from SAP HANA?
SAP HANA is the database and platform technology; SAP HANA Cloud is a cloud database service built on the HANA engine. In the QRC 2/2026 SAP HANA Cloud Database Administration Guide, SAP says it manages the underlying infrastructure, software updates, and automated backups. Customers remain responsible for database configuration, users and privileges, monitoring, and maintaining backup and recovery processes. Cloud instances are offered through SAP Business Technology Platform and can run on AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, or SAP Cloud Infrastructure. At a high level, SAP’s Platform Administration Guide describes a HANA system as having a system ID, a system database, and one or more tenant databases. What should you evaluate before choosing HANA?
- Workload: identify transactional, analytical, and custom application needs, along with data volume and relevant data types or services.
- Deployment and operations: decide how much control over the environment is needed and which organization will handle infrastructure, configuration, monitoring, and recovery.
- Capacity: size CPU, memory, and storage against the workload and deployment design; there is no universal hardware bill of materials in the cited guidance.
- Entitlements and cost: verify current licensing, feature scope, region, and contract details for the specific deployment. A universal price or license answer is not established here.
- Release scope: SAP documentation is versioned. The cited Master and Developer guides are version 2.0 SPS 08, while the Cloud administration guide is QRC 2/2026; check documentation for the release and service configuration you plan to use.
