The practical choice is between stylesheet languages such as Sass and Less, and configurable CSS processors such as PostCSS and Lightning CSS. Pick based on the syntax you want to write, the transformations your build needs, and your framework’s compatibility—not an arbitrary list size.
What a CSS preprocessor does
A CSS preprocessor lets you write styles in its own syntax and compiles that source into CSS browsers can use. Sass, Less, and Stylus are common examples. The term is also sometimes applied loosely to tools that transform CSS without introducing a separate stylesheet language, so it helps to distinguish languages from processing frameworks. MDN’s CSS preprocessor glossary describes the category.
Which tools are worth considering?
Sass: a feature-rich stylesheet language
Sass describes itself as “a stylesheet language that’s compiled to CSS.” Its documented features include variables, nested rules, mixins, and functions, making it useful when a project benefits from reusable style logic and a dedicated authoring syntax. Less: CSS-like syntax with variables and reusable rules
Less is a backwards-compatible extension of CSS with syntax intentionally close to ordinary stylesheets; Less.js compiles it to CSS. Its CSS-like approach may suit teams that want an extension language without moving far from familiar CSS syntax. Read the Less overview.

PostCSS: choose transformations through plugins
PostCSS is a framework for transforming CSS with plugins, rather than a single language with one fixed syntax. Depending on the plugins a project configures, it can handle syntax conversion, optimization, compatibility transformations, or linting. The capabilities are not automatic: they depend on the selected plugins and their configuration. Explore PostCSS.
Lightning CSS: an integrated CSS build tool
Lightning CSS combines CSS parsing, transformation, bundling, and minification. Its documented features include browser-target transformations, prefixing, and CSS Modules support, so it can be a fit when a build pipeline needs several CSS tasks in one tool. The project advertises performance figures including “over 100x faster than comparable JavaScript-based tools” and a single-thread minification rate of 2.7 million lines of code per second. These are vendor-published claims; the cited project page does not establish independent benchmark verification or methodology. See the Lightning CSS project.

Stylus: a common option with details to verify
MDN lists Stylus among common CSS preprocessors. The sources available here do not establish its current release status, detailed syntax, or feature parity with Sass and Less. Check its current project documentation and compatibility with your build setup before choosing it. MDN’s glossary lists Stylus.

How to choose for your project
- Choose Sass if variables, mixins, functions, and nested rules in a stylesheet language are central to how you want to author styles.
- Choose Less if you want an extension language whose syntax stays close to CSS and your project can use its compiler.
- Choose PostCSS if you want to compose a pipeline from specific plugins, such as compatibility transformations or linting, rather than adopt a new stylesheet language.
- Consider Lightning CSS if you want parsing, browser-target transformations, bundling, and minification handled in an integrated CSS tool.
- Check framework and bundler defaults first. A tool that fits one build pipeline may conflict with another framework’s intended workflow.
Check framework compatibility before adding a preprocessor
Tailwind CSS v4
Tailwind CSS v4 says it is not designed to be used alongside Sass, Less, or Stylus. Its documentation positions Tailwind itself as covering some needs developers might otherwise address with preprocessors. This guidance is specific to v4; do not assume it applies unchanged to other Tailwind versions. Read Tailwind’s v4 compatibility guidance.

Next.js
Next.js documents Lightning CSS as the default CSS tool when using Turbopack. For webpack, its documented default is PostCSS with postcss-preset-env, unless the project is configured otherwise; optional webpack support for Lightning CSS is marked experimental. Account for browser support, not just CSS standards
A preprocessor or transformer can change how CSS is authored or emit compatibility transformations, but neither a current specification nor a tool’s feature list guarantees support in every target browser. The W3C’s CSS Snapshot 2026, published as a Group Note on 22 June 2026, summarizes the state of CSS specifications and explicitly distinguishes specification stability from browser adoption.
