Sometimes—but not because “gaming” branding automatically lowers ping. A router can help when Wi-Fi is unstable or household traffic is clogging the connection. It cannot control delays on the route to a game server or fix the server itself. Try Ethernet first; if lag occurs mainly during downloads or uploads at home, look for proven QoS or Smart Queue Management (SQM) performance.
What a gaming router can—and cannot—change
Your game traffic travels through several links: the device-to-router connection, your home internet connection, your internet provider’s network, and the route to the game server. A router can affect the first two, but it does not control the entire path. If high ping persists on Ethernet while the household connection is otherwise idle, replacing the router may not address the cause; the ISP route or remote server may be responsible.
In its comparison of 11 routers—including expensive gaming models, budget routers, and a travel router—RTINGS found that router choice had close to no control over total gaming latency except when the household connection’s bottleneck was overloaded. The page does not state a publication year, and the result is not a universal guarantee for every home or game. RTINGS’ router latency testing
Ofcom’s home broadband performance report, based on measurements from November 2019 and last updated on 17 March 2023, describes Wi-Fi as a possible performance bottleneck as broadband speeds rise. It included Wi-Fi measurements on provider routers and two third-party devices, not current router rankings. Ofcom’s Wi-Fi performance research

When a router upgrade is most likely to help
Household traffic causes lag spikes
If gameplay becomes less responsive when someone downloads, uploads, or updates a device, the home connection may be congested. Queues can make packets wait, increasing latency under load. A router with effective QoS or SQM may prioritize game traffic in that situation, potentially at the expense of other network activity. It is not an automatic ping-reduction feature when the connection is idle, and a feature name alone does not establish that it works well.
A Tom’s Hardware review of the ASUS RT-AX82U reported that gaming priority improved results in its specific Overwatch and network-load tests, with larger differences in the congested Wi-Fi condition. The review also cautioned that its ping measurement did not directly correspond to in-game latency. That is evidence about one model and test setup, not a general effect size for gaming routers. The Wi-Fi link is weak or inconsistent
Distance, walls, nearby Wi-Fi networks, band selection, and the device’s wireless capabilities all affect the local link. In RTINGS’ comparison, which sampled ping once per second over 24 hours, its otherwise empty 2.4 GHz test network showed packet loss, while 5 GHz was more consistent. This is a test-specific observation, not a promise that 5 GHz will be better in every home: a weak 5 GHz signal through walls can perform worse than a stronger connection on another supported band. Test from the actual gaming location.
RTINGS’ testing methodology evaluates wireless latency, jitter, speed, and range separately. Its testers found most routers had similar latency performance, with nearly all scoring between 6.0 and 7.4 for gaming. That reinforces why peak throughput or a gaming label alone is a poor guide to latency stability. RTINGS’ router test methodology

How to find out whether your router is the problem
- Test Ethernet first. Connect the gaming device directly to the router if practical, then compare latency and jitter to the same game or destination using the same ISP connection. RTINGS reports consistent sub-millisecond latency in its Ethernet reference testing, while its controlled tests found more variability on Wi-Fi. A cable can isolate local wireless problems; it cannot remove ISP or game-server delay. RTINGS’ latency article
- Compare idle and busy conditions. Repeat the test while a household device is making a large download or upload. If spikes appear only under load, congestion and queueing are more plausible causes, making QoS or SQM worth evaluating.
- If using Wi-Fi, test from the play location. Compare supported bands, try moving closer or improving access-point placement, and account for walls and neighboring networks. Check latency and jitter as well as speed.
- Check whether the issue is local or remote. Note whether it also happens over Ethernet and whether it affects multiple games or only one game or server. Persistent problems beyond the local connection may involve the ISP route or remote server.
- Choose hardware for the bottleneck you found. Consider effective SQM/QoS for recurring loaded-latency trouble or better coverage for a weak-signal area. Do not buy a high-end gaming router solely on branding or a promise of lower server ping.
What to compare when shopping
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Ethernet ports and wired latency under load | A wired gaming device avoids local Wi-Fi airtime contention. |
| QoS/SQM behavior at your actual upload and download rates | Traffic management matters when the household connection is congested; feature names alone do not prove effectiveness. |
| Wireless latency and jitter on supported bands and at useful distances | Latency variation at the play location matters more than peak throughput alone. |
| Coverage and placement, including mesh satellite backhaul where applicable | Performance beside the router may not reflect performance in another room. |
| Compatibility with your ISP speed, client bands, and required ports | A new standard or port helps only when your internet plan and gaming device can use it. |
The practical verdict
For the most consistent local connection, use Ethernet if you can. If you cannot, test Wi-Fi where you play and improve placement or coverage as needed. If lag appears specifically when the household connection is busy, consider a router whose QoS or SQM performance is demonstrated under comparable conditions. No general evidence establishes a universal ping reduction from buying a gaming router, and a router cannot promise to fix delays beyond your home network.
