Before troubleshooting: identify your setup and symptom
Write down whether you are using Windows PC or Steam Deck, your storefront, the game version, the selected DirectX mode, and whether you use mods, trainers, or console commands. Also note when the issue began, whether it affects a particular save or location, and whether the game fails before or after REDlauncher. These details help narrow down what to test; they are useful triage questions, not a publisher-mandated diagnosis.
Check system requirements and the installed build
CD PROJEKT RED advises checking that your PC meets the applicable system requirements when troubleshooting crashes. Its requirements notice says that the following minimums apply “Starting from the next update” and that the game will use DirectX 12 exclusively:

The notice ties the Windows 11 requirement and active driver support to CD PROJEKT RED’s decision not to test the game on Windows 10 after Microsoft’s support end date of October 14, 2025. Because the requirements are explicitly tied to a future update, do not assume they already apply to your installed build. Verify the game files for your storefront
Corrupted or incomplete files can cause crashes or prevent the game from launching. Use the verification option for the store where you installed the game, then try launching again.

Reduce background-app and driver conflicts
For stuttering, low frame rates, or crashes, close nonessential applications and disable overlays that can interact with the game. CD PROJEKT RED names Discord, Ubisoft Connect, and GOG GALAXY overlays as examples; it also calls out hardware-monitoring utilities and antivirus or anti-malware software.

- Close apps you do not need while testing, especially monitoring tools and other game overlays.
- If you temporarily disable antivirus or anti-malware protection to test for a conflict, keep the test brief and restore protection immediately afterward. Do not leave the PC unprotected.
- Clean-install the graphics driver using the GPU maker’s driver installation options.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, try the previous driver as a diagnostic step. CD PROJEKT RED notes that an older driver can sometimes help; reverting is not a universal fix.

Steam Deck: use DirectX 11 for launch crashes
For a game that crashes on launch on Steam Deck, CD PROJEKT RED specifically recommends DirectX 11. DirectX 12 is REDlauncher’s default, so open REDlauncher, switch the graphics API to DirectX 11, and launch the game again.
