To find out whether an application can handle a traffic spike, define pass criteria before generating load, model the important user journeys and traffic pattern, and monitor both the application and the machines generating traffic. A test is useful only when its offered load is trustworthy, its environment is representative, and its results are compared with explicit thresholds.
Decide what the test must prove
Start with an operational question, such as whether checkout meets its latency objective at forecast peak, whether an API sustains a target arrival rate, or how the service behaves above expected peak. Translate that question into measurable criteria before selecting a tool or load level.
- Latency: define a target for the response-time distribution, not just an average. AWS recommends latency histograms as an SLO measure.
- Throughput: state the required requests or transactions per unit of time.
- Errors: set the maximum acceptable error rate and decide which failures count.
- Capacity behavior: define the expected scaling response and what degradation or resource saturation is unacceptable.
Grafana k6 recommends thresholds tied to service-level objectives; AWS similarly advises measurable requirements. Without criteria, a test may produce plenty of charts but no defensible pass or fail.
Choose a load profile that matches the question
Different profiles answer different questions. A steady average-load run does not establish spike tolerance, and a short peak test cannot reveal every duration-related problem.

AWS recommends covering average use, sudden spikes, and sustained peak loads. It also advises testing beyond expected load and increasing load incrementally to make scaling limits, response-time degradation, resource exhaustion, or failure easier to interpret. Begin with a low-risk baseline, then add only the profiles relevant to the question.
Model real traffic, not just a busy endpoint
List the critical endpoints and user journeys, then represent the request mix, pacing or think time, test-data variation, geography, and dependencies that shape those journeys. Include integrated paths where practical: a fast isolated endpoint does not prove that a complete checkout or sign-in flow will perform under load.

Load tools can model demand in different ways. Grafana k6 describes virtual users for concurrent-user scenarios and request-rate-oriented modeling for throughput-focused traffic. Choose the model that matches the operational question: a fixed number of concurrent users is not equivalent to a fixed arrival rate. Rate-based generation such as Vegeta can be appropriate when the question concerns arrivals and backend back-pressure. Parameterize data and check response correctness as well as speed.
Make the environment representative and safe
Match production configuration as closely as practical, including service dependencies, scaling policies, quotas, and relevant data characteristics. Use a production-like staging environment when production testing is not necessary. If a test must run against production, treat it as a controlled operational exercise: agree on protections and abort criteria, and have the right staff available.

For the AWS cloud load tests described in its guidance, AWS requires synthetic or sanitized versions of production data so sensitive or identifying information is removed. AWS also identifies policy and simulated-event-submission steps for applicable EC2 tests. Check the current requirements for the specific target and test before running; do not assume that permission to generate traffic is automatic.
Verify that the load generator can deliver the test
The generator is part of the measurement system. If it runs out of CPU, memory, network capacity, or connections, it may cap offered traffic or distort response-time results. Monitor generator CPU, RAM, network throughput, and connection limits alongside service metrics. Calibrate at lower load, confirm the generator has headroom, and distribute generation when one appropriately sized machine cannot reliably supply the target.

Grafana’s large-test guide recommends leaving roughly 20% of CPU idle for its k6 generator to reduce the chance that generation itself throttles. This is vendor-specific guidance, not a universal sizing rule; memory needs also vary with the script and data. AWS Prescriptive Guidance notes that many tests can run on one sufficiently large server, while large-scale cases may need more test-server bandwidth. A generator ceiling is not evidence of application capacity.

Compare tools by workload model, user-flow fidelity, assertions and threshold support, generator scale and geography, observability, cost, operational complexity, and CI compatibility. The available guidance discusses k6 and Vegeta but does not establish a universal winner. Grafana Cloud k6 is a commercial hosted offering; it is distinct from the open-source k6 tool.

Observe, evaluate, and repeat
Capture application-level results and infrastructure signals together: latency distributions, throughput, errors, resource use, scaling behavior, and generator health. AWS Prescriptive Guidance describes forwarding results to monitoring backends and putting success criteria in CI. Use CI for repeatable regression checks that can run under stable conditions; schedule broader capacity exercises separately when they require controlled infrastructure or operations support.
- Run a low-risk baseline and confirm that the script, data, and monitoring work.
- Increase offered load in deliberate steps for peak, stress, or breakpoint tests.
- Compare measured results with the thresholds set before the run.
- Document bottlenecks and limits, then address the highest-impact constraint.
- Rerun under comparable conditions and investigate regressions rather than treating one run as definitive.
Load testing is most useful as a recurring feedback loop after meaningful system changes, not as a launch-day ritual. As Grafana k6 puts it, “Start simple and test frequently. Iterate and grow the test suite”.
