Both are variable refresh rate (VRR) technologies intended to reduce screen tearing and stutter by matching a display’s refresh behavior to the frames a GPU renders. The better choice depends on the exact monitor, graphics card, connection, and features you need—not just the logo on the box.
What G-SYNC and FreeSync do
A monitor normally refreshes at a set rate, while a game’s frame rate can rise and fall. VRR lets the display adjust its refresh rate within a supported range to better follow the GPU’s output.
NVIDIA describes G-SYNC as technology that “matches the monitor’s refresh rate to the GPU frame rate” in its Control Panel Help. AMD FreeSync uses standards including DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync and HDMI Variable Refresh Rate. AMD explains that DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync is an industry-standard feature of a DisplayPort link used by technologies such as FreeSync in its FreeSync technology FAQ.
G-SYNC, G-SYNC Compatible, and FreeSync are not interchangeable labels
NVIDIA G-SYNC and G-SYNC ULTIMATE
NVIDIA’s product information distinguishes processor-equipped G-SYNC displays from G-SYNC Compatible monitors. NVIDIA describes G-SYNC and G-SYNC ULTIMATE as processor-equipped tiers, with features such as full VRR range and variable overdrive. Not every display includes every feature, so check the specifications for the model you are considering.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
G-SYNC Compatible
G-SYNC Compatible monitors do not use NVIDIA G-SYNC processors. NVIDIA validates them for a baseline VRR experience. The NVIDIA G-SYNC monitor list gives supported model names, interfaces, ranges, and driver notes. A FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync monitor may also work with a GeForce GPU, but that does not mean every such monitor has NVIDIA validation.
AMD FreeSync tiers
AMD has three certification categories: FreeSync, FreeSync Premium, and FreeSync Premium Pro. AMD says all tiers target tear-free, low-latency gaming and use Low Framerate Compensation (LFC); Premium and Premium Pro have higher refresh-rate requirements, and Premium Pro adds HDR-related requirements. AMD summarizes Premium as requiring at least 120 Hz at minimum FHD resolution with LFC, while Premium Pro adds low latency in SDR and HDR and HDR certification. Exact requirements and listed features can vary by display type and resolution, so verify the particular model on AMD’s FreeSync technology page and FreeSync setup guidance.

What LFC does
When a game’s frame rate falls below a display’s minimum VRR frequency, LFC duplicates frames so the display can continue refreshing within its supported range. AMD requires LFC for FreeSync Premium and Premium Pro. Do not assume that similarly named AMD and NVIDIA tiers have equivalent criteria or features; compare what each certification actually specifies.
Which one should you choose?
Start with your graphics card and the exact monitor model. If NVIDIA lists a monitor as G-SYNC Compatible, that is direct evidence of NVIDIA validation. For Radeon, confirm FreeSync support and the monitor’s connection-specific specifications. If you have not chosen a monitor yet, prioritize a model confirmed for your GPU, then compare its VRR range, refresh rate, resolution, panel performance, HDR capabilities, ports, and price.

| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| GPU fit and certification | Check whether the exact monitor is listed by NVIDIA for GeForce use or certified by AMD for Radeon use. Support can overlap, but a brand label alone does not prove compatibility with every GPU and port. |
| VRR range and LFC | Find the minimum and maximum refresh rates for the intended connection. Check whether the maker or certification documentation confirms LFC. |
| Refresh rate and resolution | Match the display’s resolution and maximum refresh rate to the games and frame rates you want. A high maximum refresh rate alone does not establish image quality or compatibility. |
| Panel and HDR performance | Compare contrast, brightness, color, response behavior, and HDR performance independently of the sync label. |
| Ports, drivers, and monitor settings | Confirm the GPU output, cable and port path, current driver, supported VRR range on that connection, and the monitor’s on-screen settings. |
| Price and warranty | Compare the full product and retailer offer; these vary by model and seller. |
DisplayPort and HDMI capabilities are model-specific. A monitor may support different VRR ranges on different inputs, so consult the specifications for the port you plan to use rather than assuming all connections behave alike.
Does FreeSync work with NVIDIA GPUs?
Sometimes. AMD says GeForce 10-series and newer GPUs that support DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync are expected to work with compatible FreeSync displays, and advises users to check with the GPU manufacturer. NVIDIA’s own G-SYNC Compatible list is the clearest way to confirm its validation for a specific monitor. Check the GPU generation, exact monitor model, connection, and driver together; the FreeSync label by itself does not establish that every combination will work.

How to enable adaptive sync
On an AMD Radeon system
- Connect the monitor using a port and cable combination that supports VRR for your model.
- Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) and enable FreeSync. Some monitor presets can disable it.
- Install or open AMD Software, then check the FreeSync status, tier, and reported refresh range. AMD’s setup guidance describes this process.
On an NVIDIA system
- Connect a G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible display using a supported port.
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel and enable G-SYNC.
- Under Monitor Technology, select G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible as appropriate. NVIDIA’s Control Panel Help documents its setup guidance.
Why there is no universal winner
The sync technology does not determine the full quality of a monitor. The available official specifications describe different certification criteria, not a like-for-like ranking of every display. The sources cited here do not establish a current independent head-to-head lab result proving that one technology delivers better image quality across monitors. Choose based on verified GPU compatibility and the particular monitor’s range, refresh rate, panel, HDR, and connection capabilities.
