Neither option is always better for families. Basic Economy may save money if you can accept the airline’s seat-assignment process and the fare remains cheaper after any needed baggage and seat fees. Paying to choose seats—or buying a fare that includes seat selection—can make it easier to plan where everyone sits, but first check the airline’s family-seating policy: some carriers make a no-cost commitment for young children, while others do not.
Compare the total price for your exact itinerary and your children’s ages. A low headline fare is not a useful saving if the family must pay extra for seats or baggage, and a policy that helps one child sit beside an adult may not put every traveler together.
Should you pay for seat selection when flying with kids?
Pay for advance seat selection when sitting together is important and the airline’s policy does not give your family the seating certainty you need. Basic Economy can be the better value when its total cost is lower and you are comfortable with the carrier’s assignment process.
Separate three things that are easy to confuse:
- Choosing seats in advance: You select specific seats, if the fare and available inventory allow it.
- Automatic assignment: The airline assigns seats later, often at check-in. That does not itself promise the family will sit together.
- A family-seating commitment: The airline says it will seat a child beside an accompanying adult under stated conditions. That may not mean the whole family will be seated together.
U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) advice notes that Basic Economy fares may not let travelers select seats. It recommends booking children on the same reservation, confirming assignments before travel, and contacting the airline if seats are not together. Seats can change after an aircraft substitution. Read the DOT family travel guidance and check your airline’s current policy for the specific flight.

What does the DOT airline dashboard say about children sitting beside an adult?
The DOT dashboard, accessed October 4, 2026, lists five U.S. airlines as committed to seating a child aged 13 or under beside an accompanying adult at no additional cost for all fare types, subject to limited conditions. It lists five surveyed airlines as not committed. DOT says it may update the dashboard, so check it again before booking.
| DOT dashboard status | Airlines listed |
|---|---|
| Committed, subject to limited conditions | Alaska, American, Frontier, Hawaiian, JetBlue |
| Not committed on the dashboard | Allegiant, Delta, Southwest, Spirit, United |
A “not committed” listing means the airline has no commitment of this kind on the dashboard; it does not mean it never helps families. The dashboard’s age limit is 13 or under. Do not assume it matches a carrier’s own age threshold or covers every companion in a booking. See the DOT Airline Customer Service Dashboard.
How does American Basic Economy handle family seating?
American Airlines’ policy illustrates why it is important to read the carrier’s actual terms rather than rely on the fare name. As described on its policy page accessed October 4, 2026, customers may pay to choose a specific seat at any time. Otherwise, American automatically assigns seats free at check-in, and companions on the same ticket are not guaranteed to sit together.

American describes a separate process for families traveling with children under 15 who do not already have seats assigned: its system searches for seats together before departure and, if seats are limited, assigns seats so each child under 15 is next to at least one adult. This is not a promise that all family members will sit together, and it is not the same age threshold as the DOT dashboard’s commitment. Check American’s Basic Economy seating terms for the current conditions.
Compare the total cost, not just the fare
Price the same itinerary for every family member. Add the cost of the seats you actually need, any fare upgrade that includes seat selection, and baggage the family expects to check. Fee amounts depend on the flight and booking; use the prices shown for your itinerary rather than a generic estimate.
| Cost or need | What to check |
|---|---|
| Seat selection | Whether the fare permits advance selection, what it costs for each traveler, and whether the family policy already provides the seating arrangement you need. |
| Checked baggage | Whether the fare includes a free checked bag on your route and whether exceptions apply to your ticket date, destination, status or eligible card. |
| Carry-on and boarding | What bags are included and when the family boards, especially if you need overhead-bin space. |
| Fare upgrade | Whether a higher fare’s included benefits cost less than buying seat selection and other needed extras separately. |
American says its Basic Economy includes one carry-on and one personal item, generally does not include a free checked bag, and typically boards last. It lists exceptions based on factors including destination, ticket date, status and eligible cardmembers, so check the terms for your booking rather than treating those statements as universal. See American’s Basic Economy travel information.

Is Basic Economy worth it for your family?
Basic Economy is worth considering when the savings remain meaningful after relevant add-ons and your family can accept the airline’s seat assignment terms. Advance seat selection is more compelling when a child needs to be beside an adult and the carrier does not make a suitable commitment, when you need a particular seating arrangement, or when the total cost of a higher fare is competitive with buying seats separately.

- Every traveler together: Do not treat a policy covering each child beside one adult as a guarantee that the whole party will sit together.
- Child’s age: Check both the airline’s own policy and any dashboard commitment; their age thresholds can differ.
- Same reservation: DOT advises booking children on the same reservation because airlines generally identify a traveling party through its reservation record.
- Third-party booking: If you book through another seller or cannot select seats together, contact the airline directly to confirm assignments and ask what accommodation is available.
- Changes before departure: Recheck assigned seats, since an aircraft substitution can change them. Arrive early if a seating issue remains unresolved so you and airline staff have time to discuss it.
Are family-seating rules already required by law?
In the United States, the DOT’s Family Seating in Air Transportation page describes a notice of proposed rulemaking, not a finalized federal requirement. The proposal would require U.S. and foreign carriers to seat children aged 13 and under beside an accompanying adult at no added cost, subject to limited exceptions. The proposal page says DOT considers family seating a basic service that should be included in the advertised fare; that statement does not make the proposal current law. See DOT’s family-seating rulemaking page.
The United Kingdom has made a separate announcement. The UK Department for Transport said on October 1, 2026, updated October 2, that airlines will be required to seat children under 14 with an accompanying adult free of charge following Royal Assent of the Civil Aviation Bill. The announcement is not evidence that the change is already in force, and it does not apply to U.S. flights. The department removed an earlier application date after identifying it as erroneous. See the UK Department for Transport announcement.
A separate safety note for children under two
Seat-selection rules do not address child restraint safety. DOT says the Federal Aviation Administration encourages using a government-approved child safety restraint system or device when traveling with a child under two. Check the official DOT guidance for traveling with children for more information.
