Evaluate a centre-back by combining what the player prevents with what they visibly do: protect space, choose when to step or drop, manage duels, recover when beaten, and help organize the line. Statistics such as tackles and interceptions are useful evidence, but they need context from role, workload, team system, and video.

Start with positioning and the space the defender protects

Before counting tackles, watch where the centre-back is relative to the ball, their defensive partner, the rest of the line, and nearby opponents. Good positioning can prevent a dangerous pass or run before a duel is necessary.

  • Body shape and distance: Can the defender see the ball and likely runners, and are they positioned to respond to either?
  • Cover and anticipation: Does the player protect a passing lane or cover a teammate who has stepped forward?
  • Decision to engage: Does the defender step out at the right moment, delay the attacker, or drop to protect space behind?
  • Recovery: If an opponent gets beyond them, can they recover without exposing the goal or abandoning a dangerous runner?

A successful tackle alone cannot show whether the defender made a sound decision beforehand or exposed a dangerous space in the process. Assess the whole sequence, including what the player’s positioning prevented.

Assess duels, one-on-ones, and aerial defending

For ground one-on-ones, examine the approach as well as the result: whether the defender delays or directs the attacker, how they respond to a change of direction, and what happens if they are beaten. For aerial contests, note both frequency and success, and pay attention to where the contest occurs and whether the defender clears danger or wins possession cleanly.

Use duel volume alongside success rate. A high success percentage from a small number of contests is not directly equivalent to sustaining a high success rate under heavy workload. Likewise, aerial and ground results should be considered separately rather than collapsed into one impression.

Use defensive statistics as clues, not a ranking

Tackles, interceptions, blocks, clearances, recoveries, and times dribbled past can help identify patterns worth reviewing on video. They do not have a simple “more is better” interpretation: high action counts can reflect a team’s style, the player’s role, or repeated exposure to danger.

Check the provider’s definitions before comparing metrics. For example, DataMB defines possession won per 90 as the sum of defensive ground duels won, tackles, and interceptions; its possession-adjusted interceptions are interceptions per 30 opponent possessions. Its definitions of defensive-duel and aerial-duel success are percentages, while progressive passes are passes that significantly advance the team. Labels and event definitions vary across providers, so similarly named figures may not be interchangeable. DataMB’s centre-back metrics provide one example of a provider-specific framework.

Action value also depends on the danger that came before the action. A study introducing Defensive Action Expected Threat (DAxT) valued tackles and interceptions according to the threat of the preceding passages of play, with validation using English Premier League event data from the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons. This is an example of contextual analysis, not a universal ready-made benchmark. The DAxT study explains that approach.

Judge the defender within the team’s system

The same statistic can mean different things for defenders with different assignments. Compare a player’s workload and opportunities as well as their outcomes.

  • High line or deeper block: Recovery pace and defending large spaces matter more when the line is high; box protection and aerial contests can carry greater weight in a deeper block.
  • Back two or back three: The number and positioning of nearby defenders affect how much space a centre-back must cover and which teammate can provide cover.
  • Stepping or covering role: An aggressive defender who steps into midfield should not be judged by the same expectations as a partner tasked with covering behind.
  • Opportunity and workload: Consider minutes, starts, opponent possession, and the number and type of duels faced. Rates as well as totals can help, and team averages provide context where available.

CIES Football Observatory’s December 2025 methodology offers one example of a structured comparison. Its ground-defence area includes ground duels won in the player’s own half, success rate, interceptions compared with the team average, and goals-conceded frequency while the player is on the pitch. Its air-defence area uses aerial duels won in the first two thirds, success rate, and goals-conceded frequency. CIES also describes weighting values by match sporting level and average minutes per match, rescaling them from 30 to 100, and adjusting by position for its general index. Those are CIES’s methodological choices, not universal evaluation rules. Read the CIES methodology before interpreting its index.

Review line organization and concentration

Watch how the centre-back coordinates with their partner and fullbacks, tracks runners, maintains the offside line, and responds to changes in the attack. These details often require video or tracking evidence; a basic event-stat table does not capture every positioning or communication decision.

Off-ball evaluation is developing. A January 2026 preprint proposes using tracking data to infer man-marking and zonal assignments during corner kicks, then assessing defensive contributions against context-aware baselines. Its scope is set-piece defending, so it should not be treated as a method for evaluating every open-play action. The preprint’s stated scope is limited to corner-kick situations.

Separate build-up ability from defensive performance

If a centre-back is expected to start attacks, assess passing as a distinct part of the role. Consider safe passing under pressure, forward and progressive passing, and longer distribution—but compare those qualities only when the players have similar build-up responsibilities. CIES lists build-up separately from its defensive areas, using successful passes from the own half compared with the team average and success rate. DataMB also defines centre-back forward-pass completion and progressive passes as separate measures.

Use season figures only as dated examples

The Premier League’s 2025 comparison of centre-backs for the 2024/25 season illustrates why profiles should be read in context, not as universal standards.

Player Aerial duel success Duel success Interceptions Blocks
Virgil van Dijk 72.1% 68.65% 56 16
Ezri Konsa not stated in the Premier League comparison 68.97% 24 11

These are figures listed by the Premier League for its 2024/25-season comparison, published in 2025; they are examples of different statistical profiles, not thresholds for a good centre-back. The article’s comparison also notes that starts, injury record, and club performance affect comparisons. See the Premier League comparison.

A practical review sequence

  1. Establish the assignment: Identify the player’s role, formation, line height, and whether they are expected to step, cover, or lead build-up.
  2. Watch for prevention: Note protected spaces and passing lanes, cover provided, and decisions to engage, delay, or drop.
  3. Review contests: Record ground and aerial duel volume and success, then inspect the situations behind both wins and losses.
  4. Use event data to find patterns: Check tackles, interceptions, blocks, clearances, recoveries, and times dribbled past, using provider definitions and workload context.
  5. Check organization and consistency: Review coordination, run tracking, offside-line behavior, and concentration across the match.
  6. Evaluate distribution separately: Include passing and progression only if they are part of the player’s actual responsibility.
