Read those numbers in context: compare similar roles, account for team possession and minutes, check how each metric is defined, and use video to assess positioning that event data cannot capture.
Which stats should you start with?
Build a compact profile from four groups: defensive actions and outcomes, pressing and regains, retention under pressure, and progression. Add a provider-specific value measure if available. No single statistic settles the question because a number 6’s job can range from screening in a double pivot to receiving and progressing the ball as a single pivot.
| What you want to assess | Useful measures | What they help show |
|---|---|---|
| Defensive disruption | Tackles, interceptions, possession-adjusted tackles and interceptions, tackle/dribbled-past rate | How often the player disrupts possession and, where the metric is available, how often a tackle attempt is associated with being dribbled past |
| Pressing | Pressures, pressure regains, and the locations of pressure actions | How the player participates in pressure and whether the team regains the ball soon after that pressure |
| Retention | Turnovers, passing completion, and actions after receiving under pressure | Whether the midfielder can protect possession, especially when pressed in the defensive half |
| Progression | Progressive passes and carries, or provider-defined deep progressions | Whether the player helps move the ball forward, considered alongside completion and turnovers |
Definitions vary by provider. For instance, StatsBomb’s defensive-midfielder metrics guide and 2023 radar update describe particular metric constructions and changes to that provider’s radar; they are not universal standards.
How should you read defensive actions?
Put tackles and interceptions in context
Tackle and interception totals describe activity, not defensive quality on their own. A player on a team that has less possession may have more chances to make those actions. A midfielder who screens a passing lane effectively may prevent an opponent from receiving the ball without recording a tackle or interception.

Use per-90 rates to account for playing time, then check minutes and sample size. Where available, include possession-adjusted tackles and interceptions: StatsBomb’s 2021 explanation of defensive metrics describes adjusting those actions in relation to team possession. Such an adjustment helps with one source of opportunity bias; it does not make players from different roles, teams or competitions directly interchangeable.
Pair attempts with outcomes
Add a tackle/dribbled-past measure where the provider offers one. It gives more information than a raw tackle count by relating tackling activity to an outcome. StatsBomb’s 2023 radar update also introduced Defensive Action OBV, its model-based value measure for defensive actions, while removing several raw-count spokes. Treat both as provider-specific metrics, not universal ratings.

What do pressure stats tell you?
Pressure volume describes attempts to affect an opponent in possession; it does not mean the player or team won the ball. Pressure regains add an outcome: StatsBomb defines them as situations in which the player’s team regains possession within five seconds of that player’s pressure. Check the provider’s definition before comparing the measure across data sources.
Keep individual pressure measures separate from PPDA. PPDA is a team-level ratio of opposition passes allowed to defensive actions; in the cited StatsBomb example, defensive actions include tackles, interceptions, challenges and fouls. It describes pressing intensity, not whether an individual midfielder’s pressure succeeded. Its author explicitly framed the initial measure as descriptive: “I am developing a descriptive measure, and at this stage whether the press is successful or not is not the aim of this initial step.” See StatsBomb’s PPDA explanation for that construction.

How can you judge ball retention under pressure?
Read passing completion alongside turnovers rather than treating a high completion rate as proof of secure possession. A player who mostly makes uncontested short passes can have a strong completion rate without showing whether they can receive and play through pressure.
If the data supports it, examine what happens after a pressured reception: does the midfielder retain the ball with a pass, carry or dribble, or by winning a foul? StatsBomb’s 2022/23 central-midfielder analysis uses a defensive-half, under-pressure retention lens. Interpret it as one useful way to examine retention, not as a complete measure of a player’s role.

How should you measure progression?
Look at progressive passes and carries, or the provider’s equivalent. StatsBomb’s radar material uses “deep progressions” for passes and dribbles or carries into the opposition final third. Check the definition before treating that label as comparable to another provider’s progression metric.
Interpret progression with completion and turnovers. A screening midfielder asked to distribute safely should not be judged against a single pivot expected to break lines as if they had the same assignment. Volume without risk and role context can misrepresent both players.

When are value metrics useful?
A model such as Defensive Action OBV can add context by estimating the value of a defensive action rather than merely counting it. StatsBomb describes OBV as net on-ball value and Defensive Action OBV as value from defensive actions. The output depends on the provider’s model and should be identified as such; it is not a universal score or a substitute for understanding the player’s tactical job.
Quick Recap
How do you compare defensive midfielders fairly?
- Match the role. Compare players with similar jobs—such as single pivot, double-pivot partner, ball-winner or deep distributor—rather than assuming every player listed as a defensive midfielder has the same assignment.
- Account for exposure. Use per-90 rates, but retain minutes and sample size alongside them. Rate normalization does not erase differences in team, opposition, competition or role.
- Separate team context from individual output. Note team possession and pressing approach; use possession-adjusted actions where available, and inspect defensive or pressure events by pitch zone or game state if your data supports those splits.
- Pair volume with outcomes. Read tackles with tackle/dribbled-past rate, pressures with regains, passing volume with retention, and progression with turnovers.
- Check definitions. Name the provider and confirm its event rules and metric construction. Provider definitions differ, and even a provider’s own radar template can change over time.
- Review positioning. Use match video or tracking data to assess screening, cover shadows, shape and coordinated movement. StatsBomb notes that on-ball event data does not directly measure positioning in its defensive-midfielder metrics guide.
