Often called a number 6, the player’s precise duties depend on the team’s formation and the coach’s plan: the role may involve screening the defence, offering a passing outlet, moving the ball forward, or some combination of these.
What is a defensive midfielder?
A defensive midfielder plays in central midfield, with a key responsibility for the area ahead of the defenders. FIFA describes the position as the player who “marshals the zone in front of his side’s rearguard.” That description captures the role’s central protective purpose, but it does not mean the player stays in one spot or only defends.
The role also links defence and attack. FIFA’s profile of Madagascar midfielder Ibrahim Amada describes him as a key link between the two phases and notes his defensive contribution. Amada said he could move the ball forward and join attacks in his new position.
What does a defensive midfielder do?
Protects the central area
Without the ball, the midfielder helps screen and protect the space in front of the defence. This contributes to the team’s defensive structure. The job is broader than tackling: the available role descriptions emphasize protecting the zone and contributing defensively, rather than providing a complete checklist of actions every player must perform.

Connects defence to possession
When the team has the ball, a defensive midfielder can offer teammates a passing option and help link the first phase of possession with players farther forward. The player may keep possession safely, advance the ball with a forward pass, or do both, depending on the system and instructions.
Reads play and chooses passes
Amada described how the position affected his view of the game: “In this new position, it’s easier for me to see how the game is evolving and to pick out my team-mates with my passes.” FIFA published that comment in its 24 July 2020 feature about his positional change. It is Amada’s account of his experience, not a claim that every defensive midfielder sees or plays the game in the same way.

What does “number 6” mean?
“Number 6” is commonly used to describe a defensive-midfield profile. FIFA’s feature on Spain’s midfield distinguishes number 6, number 8 and number 10 profiles, but that terminology does not supply a universal tactical instruction. A number 6 is not automatically a lone midfielder, a dedicated tackler, or a player with identical responsibilities in every formation.

The position’s responsibilities vary with the team’s shape and coaching plan. To understand a particular player’s job, consider these questions rather than assuming every defensive midfielder has the same assignment:

- Central cover: How much of the space ahead of the defence is the player expected to protect?
- Support structure: Does another central midfielder share the screening and buildup responsibilities?
- Possession responsibility: Is the player mainly a safe passing outlet, expected to progress the ball, or asked to do both?
- Freedom to advance: If the player moves forward, how does the team cover the space left behind?
These questions help explain why two players described as defensive midfielders may look different in a match. The label identifies a broad role profile; the coach’s plan determines its details.
