It is a hands-on build rather than a ready-made toy: you supply or buy the matching body parts, wire the electronics, and load example code. This guide covers classic Otto DIY; the newer HP Otto is a separate path with different hardware and features, so do not mix its parts or instructions into a classic build (Otto DIY).
What is an Otto Arduino robot?
Classic Otto DIY is an open-source biped project built around an Arduino Nano-compatible controller and four small servos. Its basic documented behaviors are walking, dancing, making buzzer sounds, and responding to nearby obstacles. The official Arduino library includes examples for movement, servo calibration, and ultrasonic obstacle avoidance (OttoDIYLib).
The name can also refer to newer Otto products. The classic DIY build and HP Otto are presented separately by Otto DIY; their hardware and capabilities are not interchangeable. Confirm that a kit, printed parts, manual, and code are specifically for classic Otto DIY before buying or assembling (Otto DIY).
What parts do you need for a classic Otto?
The project’s basic parts list calls for the following items (Otto DIY project repository):

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- One Nano ATmega328-compatible board and one Nano I/O shield
- One USB-A-to-Mini-USB cable
- Four SG90 9 g micro servos
- One HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor
- One piezo buzzer
- Female-to-female Dupont wires
- An AA battery holder, four AA batteries, and an on/off switch
- Printed head, body, legs, and feet for the matching Otto version
Useful tools include a small Phillips screwdriver, a computer, scissors or pliers, and a 3D printer if you are making the body parts yourself. Use the current build manual for exact wiring, board revision, power arrangement, and print files rather than treating a generic Nano or Otto guide as authoritative (Otto DIY project repository).
What each main component does
- Nano ATmega328-compatible board: Runs the robot code. Check its dimensions, USB connector, and fit with the selected Nano I/O shield. Some clones need a separate USB-serial driver, so follow the board maker’s instructions.
- Four SG90 servos: Move the legs and feet. The Otto library is designed around a four-motor biped and includes calibration examples; match the mounting dimensions and calibrate the servos before expecting a stable gait (OttoDIYLib).
- HC-SR04 sensor: Supplies the distance input used by the obstacle-avoidance example (OttoDIYLib).
- Buzzer: Produces the robot’s sounds.
- Printed body: Holds the electronics and provides the robot’s head, body, legs, and feet. Use files for the exact Otto variant; parts from another design may not fit.
- Power and wiring: The basic list includes an AA holder, four AA cells, a switch, and jumper wires. Follow the project’s wiring and power guidance; do not assume the USB programming cable is also the robot’s operating-power setup.
Should you buy a kit or source the parts?
Otto DIY describes a Builder Kit that adds plastic body parts to the electronics-oriented Maker Kit. The individual-parts route is practical if you already own a printer, want to choose components, or plan to customize the shell (Otto DIY kits; Otto DIY).

| Build route | Best suited to | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Builder Kit | A single bundled purchase that includes printed body parts | Whether the current listing includes the exact Nano board and shield, four compatible servos, HC-SR04, buzzer, batteries, cable, and the classic Otto DIY instructions. |
| Maker Kit or separate parts | Builders who already have a printer, want to select components, or want to customize the body | Whether printed parts are excluded; whether all electronics and power items are included; and whether the parts and files match classic Otto DIY. |
Kit configurations can change. Compare the current bill of materials with the basic list above, and check specifically whether batteries and printed body pieces are included. The legacy kit page is useful for understanding the Builder Kit distinction, but its old price and contents should not be treated as current (Otto DIY kits; Otto DIY kit blog).
How do you program and start the robot?
The kit page lists Otto Blockly and Arduino IDE as programming options. For a code-first build, the official OttoDIYLib repository provides the library and example sketches. Its pin assignments are examples, not a guarantee for every wiring arrangement, so reconcile them with your actual shield and connections (OttoDIYLib; Otto DIY kits).

- Choose the classic DIY version. Keep its body files, electronics, manual, and code together rather than borrowing HP Otto components.
- Check the kit contents or gather the full parts list. Confirm the Nano board and shield, four servos, sensor, buzzer, wiring, power parts, and matching body pieces.
- Print or obtain the correct body parts. Use the files and assembly guidance for the exact classic Otto variant you are building.
- Assemble the frame and electronics using the current official manual. Follow its wiring and power instructions; connector and board revisions can matter.
- Install the matching library and inspect the examples. The repository includes movement, servo-calibration, and obstacle-avoidance sketches.
- Check each servo and sensor, then calibrate the neutral position. Adjust the example pin mapping if it does not match your wiring before trying a full movement routine.
- Try movement first, then obstacle avoidance. Once the gait and sensor readings are behaving as expected, run the ultrasonic avoidance example (OttoDIYLib).
Can you build Otto without a 3D printer?
Yes, if you obtain printed body parts that match the classic Otto version instead of printing them yourself. The basic project design uses printed head, body, leg, and foot pieces; it does not establish that arbitrary shells or parts from another Otto variant will fit. A Builder Kit may suit this route because Otto DIY describes it as adding plastic parts to the Maker Kit, but check the current listing for exact contents (Otto DIY kits; Otto DIY project repository).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is an Otto robot kit beginner friendly?
It is a suitable learning project for someone prepared to assemble a small robot and work through basic Arduino programming, wiring, and servo calibration. It is not just a plug-in toy: a successful build depends on matching the version and parts, following wiring instructions, and calibrating the movement. The official material documents example code and a parts list, but it does not establish a guaranteed build time, success rate, durability, or learning outcome.
