Lethal injection is a method of execution, not one uniform procedure: U.S. jurisdictions have used different drug protocols, while other methods use a different physical means altogether. Which methods are legally available—and whether a jurisdiction has a published, operational protocol or has recently used one—depends on the jurisdiction and date.
Method versus protocol: what is the difference?
A method is the broad means by which an execution is carried out, such as administering drugs or using an electric current. A protocol is the jurisdiction’s particular procedure for carrying out that method. For lethal injection, that can include the drugs selected and the sequence in which they are used; other methods also have method-specific procedures.
So “lethal injection” does not identify a single nationwide drug procedure. The Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC) describes one-, two-, and three-drug approaches and compiles state-specific protocols with effective dates. Its compilation is a secondary source, and its entries have different dates; a dated entry should not be treated as confirmation of a state’s current official procedure.
How lethal-injection protocols vary
DPIC groups lethal-injection protocols by the number of drugs used. Its overview says most three-drug protocols use an anesthetic or sedative, followed by a paralytic, followed by a drug intended to stop the heart. It describes one- and two-drug approaches as typically using an overdose of an anesthetic or sedative. Those are DPIC’s descriptions of protocol categories, not a universal medical assessment of how any particular execution will proceed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Examples from DPIC’s dated compilation
- Alabama: DPIC’s listed three-drug protocol names midazolam, rocuronium bromide, and potassium chloride. The cited compilation entry is dated to the mid-2020s; check the current state protocol before treating it as current.
- Arizona: DPIC’s May 2025 entry describes a one-drug approach authorizing pentobarbital or sodium pentothal. That dated secondary listing does not, by itself, establish which drug is currently available or which protocol is operational.
Protocol information can be incomplete. State laws or policies may shield details about drug suppliers, execution personnel, or procedures. A published protocol, a completed execution, a court record, and a state’s legal authorization are different kinds of evidence; one does not automatically establish the others.
How the other named methods differ
DPIC identifies electrocution, lethal gas, firing squad, and hanging alongside lethal injection. The distinction at this level is the physical means used, not a standardized finding about pain, speed, or reliability.

| Method | Broad physical means | What must be checked about its legal or procedural status |
|---|---|---|
| Lethal injection | Administration of drugs under a jurisdiction-specific protocol. | Which drug approach and protocol are listed, when the protocol took effect, and whether the method is authorized, a fallback, selected, or used. DPIC’s protocol compilation gives dated examples; the current official state protocol is the relevant check. |
| Electrocution | Use of electric current. | Whether the jurisdiction authorizes it and under what conditions; a method’s appearance in a general summary does not establish that it is the current default or operational. |
| Lethal gas | Use of a gas to cause death. | The jurisdiction’s authorization and any applicable procedure. A general method description is not proof of a current protocol or recent use. |
| Firing squad | Gunfire. | Whether the jurisdiction authorizes it, whether it is an available alternative or fallback, and whether a current procedure is published. |
| Hanging | Suspension by the neck. | Whether the method remains authorized and whether a current procedure exists; authorization alone does not show recent use. |
DPIC’s “Methods of Execution” overview and “Execution Method Descriptions” page provide high-level descriptions and information about legal developments. Because state laws and procedures can change, a present-day state-by-state answer requires checking the relevant statute and official corrections-department protocol, not relying on a general methods list alone.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Authorized: Does a statute or other applicable law permit the method?
- Default or fallback: Is it the ordinary method, or available only under specified circumstances, such as when another method cannot be used?
- Protocol published: Is there a publicly available procedure, and what is its effective date?
- Used: Is there evidence that the method was carried out in a completed execution, and when?
A method listed in a statute or summary is not necessarily the current default, supported by a current operational protocol, or recently used. Some methods may depend on a condemned person’s election or apply only as a fallback. The answer has to be established separately for each jurisdiction and the relevant date.
What can—and cannot—be concluded about pain or reliability
DPIC’s lethal-injection overview discusses litigation, difficulty obtaining drugs, secrecy, and reported executions in which prisoners showed signs of pain or distress. Those reports are relevant to disputes about particular protocols and events; they do not establish that every execution using a given protocol has the same outcome.

The sources summarized here do not provide a standardized scientific comparison that ranks lethal injection, electrocution, gas, firing squad, and hanging by pain, reliability, or speed. It would therefore be misleading to call one method categorically painless, more humane, more reliable, or quicker on this evidence.

In Bucklew v. Precythe, decided April 1, 2019, the Supreme Court stated: “To establish that a State’s chosen method of execution cruelly ‘superadds’ pain to the death sentence, a prisoner must show a feasible and readily implemented alternative method of execution that would significantly reduce a substantial risk of severe pain and that the State has refused to adopt without a legitimate penological reason.”

That is a legal test for a constitutional challenge, not a scientific ranking of execution methods or a finding that every lethal-injection protocol is lawful. A challenge to a specific protocol can turn on the record in that case, and the legal status of a particular procedure may be contested.
