Bluetooth devices, USB-connected peripherals, downloaded maps and books, and some preconfigured smart-home or camera functions can work locally. Streaming, cloud services, remote control, live traffic, and alerts are common losses. The key is to check what must be downloaded or set up beforehand—and whether the device needs your home Wi-Fi network to remain on.
What “offline” means for a gadget
There are two different kinds of disconnection. Your router may still provide a local Wi-Fi network even when its internet connection is down; devices on that network may continue communicating locally. If Wi-Fi is also unavailable, a gadget may still work through Bluetooth, a direct USB cable, built-in controls, or content saved on the device.
Some features require preparation. Maps and books must be downloaded, and local schedules or camera recording settings may need to be configured while the device is online. Offline operation is therefore feature- and model-specific, not a guarantee that a whole product will work normally.
Which gadgets can keep working offline?
| Gadget or task | What may work without internet | What may stop or need preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Navigation and maps | Directions and map details for a previously downloaded area on supported apps or systems. | Download the area first. Live traffic and current online information are unavailable or may be stale; storage, region, and expiry limits can apply. |
| Bluetooth audio and peripherals | Local connections between a paired computer or phone and Bluetooth headphones, speakers, keyboards, or mice. | Streaming and cloud voice-assistant features need connectivity unless the audio is stored locally or provided by another local source. Some speakers require first-time setup. |
| Books and audiobooks | Titles downloaded in a compatible app for offline use. | Undownloaded titles may stream and require internet; offline support varies by app and title. |
| Printers | Local printing from a computer connected by USB, where the printer, driver, and setup support it. | Cloud printing and connected subscription services may depend on internet; enrolled printers can have additional restrictions. |
| Smart plugs, lights, and automation | Some preloaded schedules, local controls, and automations when a local network and compatible controller remain available. | Behavior depends on model and ecosystem. Setup, voice commands, remote control, or cloud-dependent functions may stop. |
| Security cameras | On certain models, scheduled recording to an installed and configured microSD card. | Live viewing, settings changes, and cloud alert videos may be unavailable. Compatibility, power, and advance configuration matter. |
Navigation: download maps before you travel
Apple says Maps on iOS 17 or later can use downloaded offline maps for supported place information—including opening hours and ratings—and turn-by-turn directions for driving, walking, cycling, or public transport. Maps take up device storage, availability and features vary by country or region, and downloads do not sync across devices. See Apple’s instructions for downloading maps to use offline on iPhone.

Google says compatible cars with Google built-in can use Google Maps offline if the map is downloaded in advance. Real-time traffic is unavailable without a connection, and those offline maps expire one year after download unless updated. Details are in Google’s guidance for using Google built-in without a mobile data plan or internet connection.
- Download the destination area while connected, then confirm it appears in the app’s offline-map list.
- Check available storage and download coverage for the whole route, not only the destination.
- Plan for missing live traffic and potentially outdated business information.
Bluetooth audio and accessories: local links, not internet
Bluetooth connects nearby devices directly; it does not provide internet access or supply media that has not been saved. Microsoft documents pairing Windows computers with Bluetooth keyboards, mice, speakers, headphones, and other devices in its Windows Bluetooth pairing guide.

For a specific speaker example, Bang & Olufsen says the Beosound Emerge can use Bluetooth and line-in without internet. Models with built-in Google Assistant must complete Google Home first-time setup before Bluetooth pairing. Check the Beosound Emerge offline-use guidance for that model.
Downloaded books and media: verify the download
Libby’s mobile app lets readers use downloaded books and audiobooks offline. Titles that have not been downloaded are streamed and require internet, and Libby’s web app always requires internet. Its explanation is at Libby Help: “What titles are downloaded for offline use?”. Other reading and media apps may have different download rules, so open the title on the device before leaving coverage rather than assuming it is available offline.

Printers: USB can bypass the internet for local printing
A compatible printer connected directly to a Windows PC by USB may print without internet, subject to printer, driver, and setup support. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance covers printer connection and printing problems in Windows.
That local path is different from cloud or subscription features. HP says Web Services and Instant Ink functions rely on internet, and an extended disconnection can stop printing for enrolled printers. Check HP’s guidance on the “Printer not connected to the internet” message and your printer’s enrollment before relying on it offline.

Smart-home devices: local control depends on the model and network
Some smart-home functions can continue without an internet connection, especially when a schedule or automation has already been stored locally. That does not mean every app, voice assistant, remote-control feature, or new-device setup will continue to work.
Schedules and timers
TP-Link says Kasa timer and schedule features are loaded locally and continue when the internet is down. Its guidance distinguishes them: a schedule continues even if the device is manually controlled, while a timer can stop in that situation. See TP-Link UK’s Kasa Smart Home Devices FAQs.

Matter and other local connections
Schneider Electric says commissioned Matter-compatible devices can still be controlled and run automations without internet when a local Wi-Fi network and controller are available. Depending on the ecosystem, commissioning new devices or voice commands may be lost. Its overview is “What is Matter?”.
Amazon’s developer documentation describes local connectivity options including BLE mesh, Zigbee, and Matter, but a protocol’s presence alone does not guarantee that all routines or remote features work offline. See Amazon’s “Other Local Connectivity Protocol Options for Smart Home Devices”. As a counterexample, Tuya says its app-controlled device connection requires internet; consult Tuya’s offline-use guidance for its service.
Security cameras: local recording is not the same as remote monitoring
Wyze says certain camera models can continue scheduled recording to a microSD card while offline, if the schedule was set up while online and the camera has power. During the outage, the app cannot provide live viewing or setting changes, and cloud alert videos are not saved. Check Wyze’s list of cameras that can be used without Wi-Fi for compatible models. Before an outage, verify your exact camera’s card capacity and recording-mode support, and install and configure the card.
Quick Recap
How to check whether your gadget will work
- Identify the connection you are losing. If internet is down but the router still runs, local Wi-Fi may remain available. If Wi-Fi is also down, look for Bluetooth, USB, standalone controls, or stored content.
- Find the exact model’s offline requirements. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for required apps, accounts, subscriptions, hubs, supported regions, storage, and setup steps.
- Prepare while connected. Download maps, books, or media; commission devices; configure schedules; and set up local camera recording where supported.
- Test the intended task. Disconnect internet in a safe, controlled way while keeping any required local network running. Confirm the specific function you need rather than relying on the product’s general “offline” label.
- Review support status. Internet requirements and features can change with firmware, services, and support lifetime. The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends checking minimum device requirements and manufacturer support dates; its advice is to avoid devices that are no longer supported, or whose support period will end soon, where possible. See NCSC guidance on using smart devices safely at home.
