Yes—on a U.S. flight, you can generally bring a 20,000 mAh power bank in your carry-on, provided its marked watt-hour (Wh) rating meets the applicable limit. Keep it out of checked baggage. Because mAh alone does not establish Wh, check the label on your specific power bank and confirm the operating airline’s current rules.
Can you take a 20,000 mAh power bank on a plane?
For U.S. passenger flights, a power bank is treated as a spare lithium-ion battery: pack it in the cabin, not in checked baggage. If your carry-on is gate-checked, remove the power bank and keep it with you in the cabin. Check the power bank’s watt-hour rating
The capacity printed in milliamp-hours (mAh) is not enough by itself to determine whether the unit fits the flight limit. Look for a Wh marking on the power bank. If it is not shown, calculate it using the battery’s voltage and capacity: Wh = volts × amp-hours. Convert mAh to amp-hours by dividing by 1,000.
For example, the FAA’s passenger guidance illustrates the formula with a 12-volt, 8-Ah battery: 12 × 8 = 96 Wh. That is a formula example, not the rating of a 20,000 mAh power bank. Use the voltage and capacity information for your own unit. FAA lithium battery guidance and Wh calculation.

FAA passenger limits for spare lithium-ion batteries

Pack it to prevent damage and short circuits
- Keep the power bank accessible in your cabin bag so you can remove it if the bag is checked at the gate.
- Protect its terminals from contact with metal objects. FAA examples include leaving it in its original packaging, covering the terminals with tape, using a battery case or sleeve, or placing it snugly in a separate plastic bag. FAA packing examples.

What to do if a battery overheats during the flight
If a power bank or other lithium battery becomes unusually hot, expands, smokes, or burns, tell a cabin crew member immediately. Lithium-ion batteries can undergo thermal runaway; the FAA identifies damage, overheating, water exposure, overcharging, inadequate protection, and manufacturing defects as possible causes. Before you leave for the airport
- Read the Wh rating on the power bank. If only mAh is listed, use the battery voltage and the FAA formula to calculate Wh.
- Confirm that the rating fits the FAA limit and check the operating airline’s current policy for any stricter rule or required approval.
- Inspect the unit; leave a damaged or recalled battery that may spark or produce dangerous heat behind unless it has been made safe.
- Pack it in your carry-on with its terminals protected. If your bag is gate-checked, take the power bank out and carry it into the cabin.
