For a standard Steam Store game, Valve’s usual rule is to request it within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. If you fall outside those limits, you can still submit a request for review, but approval is not guaranteed.
How to request a Steam game refund
- Go to Steam Support and sign in to the Steam account that bought the game.
- Open Purchases and select the game purchase.
- Choose the issue that best describes the problem.
- Select “I’d like to request a refund.”
- Complete and submit the form. Choose Steam Wallet or your original payment method if Steam offers both options.
- Check your email for confirmation that the request was submitted, then for a later message telling you it has been processed.
If the game does not appear under Purchases, Steam says it may be too far outside the refund window to use that flow. You can still contact Steam Support to ask for review. If Steam declines the request and you believe it was handled incorrectly, its support guide says you can submit another request with a detailed explanation.
Steam’s standard refund rule for games
For games and software bought on Steam, Valve’s policy, last updated April 23, 2024, says to request a refund within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. The playtime count includes online, offline, and shared-library play. The conditions are a usual eligibility rule, not a promise that every request meeting them will be approved.
If you tried a game and simply did not enjoy it, that is a reason you can give when requesting a refund. If more than 14 days have passed or you have played for two hours or more, you may still ask: Steam says it will review requests outside the usual rules, but does not guarantee a refund. Consumer rights may also provide additional remedies for faulty games in some jurisdictions.

Check the rules for your purchase type
The standard game rule does not cover every Steam purchase. The conditions below are from Valve’s refund policy, last updated April 23, 2024; check the linked policy for the category that matches your purchase.

| Downloadable content (DLC) | Generally, request within 14 days and have less than two hours of playtime in the underlying game since buying the DLC. The DLC must not have been consumed, modified, or transferred. Some third-party DLC is nonrefundable; Steam identifies this on the Store page. |
| In-game purchases | For Valve-developed games, request within 48 hours and make sure the item has not been consumed, modified, or transferred. Third-party developers may opt in; Steam says eligibility is disclosed at purchase. |

Where the refund goes and how long it takes
For an approved refund, Valve says it issues the money within a week, to the original payment method if it supports refunds or otherwise to your Steam Wallet. International payment methods can take longer to appear, and approved Steam Wallet credit may take 24–48 hours.

Steam Support presents the available refund destinations in the request form. If your original payment method is not offered, Steam Wallet is the alternative when available.

If Steam does not approve your request
- Check that you selected the right purchase and submitted the request from the account that bought it.
- If you are outside the usual 14-day or two-hour limits, explain your circumstances clearly; Steam may review the request, but the result is uncertain.
- If Steam declines the request and you believe there was a mistake, submit another request with a detailed message through Steam Support.
