A set’s box size or piece count cannot tell you whether it will fit. If the build opens or spreads out, measure that display configuration separately.
How to measure a LEGO model for a display case
- Set the pose first. Put the model in the position and orientation you intend to display: closed or open, upright or tilted, and with any movable sections arranged as they will be shown.
- Measure the finished build. Record its widest points in width, depth, and height. Include any stand, plaque, figures, or scenery that will go inside the case.
- Compare internal dimensions. Check the case’s stated usable interior, not just its outside footprint. Leave enough clearance to place the model inside and remove it without forcing it against the walls or top.
- Check the shelf separately. Compare the case’s external width, depth, and height with the shelf or cabinet where it will sit.
- Verify construction and handling. Check whether the case arrives flat-packed, needs assembly, has a choice of base color, can be stacked, and is intended to be moved with the model inside. Confirm these details on the current listing.
This approach is also recommended in Moduspace’s July 2026 guide to choosing a LEGO display case. It is manufacturer guidance, not an independent fit or durability test.
Question Block 71395: closed versus open display
The LEGO Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block (71395) is a useful example because it can be displayed in two substantially different configurations. Nintendo says the completed model is over 18 cm high, wide, and deep, and that it opens to reveal four Super Mario 64 scenes. Those are baseline dimensions for the set, not a substitute for measuring your own completed build, additions, or intended pose. Nintendo’s listing also identifies 2,064 pieces and ten included microfigures; piece count does not determine case fit. See the official Nintendo listing.
Closed display cases
For the closed model, iDisplayit lists a fitted case with approximate internal dimensions of 21 × 21 × 20 cm and external dimensions of 23 × 23 × 21 cm. The listing specifies 3 mm clear acrylic, a flat-packed case assembled with eight screws, a black or white base, and stackability. It also says the base has room for 26 × 26 LEGO studs; the displayed LEGO set is not included. These are the seller’s specifications, not an independent fit test. Another closed-position option, from Kingdom Brick Supply, lists approximate internal dimensions of 23.2 × 23.2 × 20.0 cm and external dimensions of 24.7 × 24.7 × 20.6 cm. It specifies 3 mm acrylic and says assembly is required. The larger stated interior may offer more clearance than the iDisplayit listing, but actual fit depends on your build and pose; the retailer’s dimensions are not an independent fit test. Open display case
If you want to show the scenes inside the block, the closed-case measurements are not enough. iDisplayit lists an XL case for the open-position set with internal dimensions of 39 × 26 × 30 cm and external dimensions of 41 × 28 × 31 cm. Its listing says the case is not designed to be relocated with the LEGO model inside. Confirm that your opened model fits in the orientation you want before ordering. What to check beyond dimensions
- Pose and orientation: A case specified for a closed build does not establish fit when the model is opened. Check the exact display position.
- Interior versus exterior: Interior dimensions determine model clearance; exterior dimensions determine whether the assembled case fits the furniture.
- Assembly: Listings may describe flat-packed cases or assembly requirements. Allow for that when planning where and when to build the case.
- Base and stacking: Verify the available base color and any stated stacking guidance on the listing rather than assuming these features are standard.
- Moving the display: A case may not be suitable for relocation with the model inside. The XL iDisplayit listing specifically warns against moving it in that condition.
Specifications and listing details can change. The dimensions above are seller-published figures, not results from comparative product testing; check the current listing before buying. Do not assume a case provides UV protection, a dust seal, scratch resistance, or a particular level of stability unless its current product information says so.

LEGO’s blue Play and Display Case is a general two-level product with six gray baseplates and a transparent cover. LEGO lists its dimensions as over 19 cm high, 39 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. Those outside dimensions do not establish that it fits the Question Block, especially in its open configuration. Treat it as a general option only after obtaining and checking its current internal measurements against your model and planned pose. See LEGO’s product listing.
