Start by finding what is using power and how much storage is free; then change only the settings tied to the problem. On Motorola phones, menus vary by model and Android version, but checking Battery usage, Storage and—if needed—Safe mode can help distinguish an app problem from ordinary screen or background demand.
Check what is draining the battery and slowing the phone
- Review battery use. Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage and look for apps or features using an unusually large share. The list and time period shown vary by model and software. If one app stands out, check whether you actively use it and whether its background activity is necessary. Motorola’s battery-life guidance describes reviewing usage and managing high-consuming apps.
- Check internal storage. Open Settings > Storage and see how much space is available. Motorola notes that a phone may have issues when internal storage is almost full. Remove files you no longer need, uninstall unused apps, or clear an individual app’s cache if appropriate; clearing every cache is not a guaranteed speed fix. See Motorola’s storage guidance.
These checks help narrow the cause: a single app dominating battery use suggests a different next step from nearly full storage or broad sluggishness with no obvious app culprit.
Make small changes to reduce battery use
Reduce screen demand
- Lower screen brightness and shorten the screen timeout.
- Turn off a live wallpaper if you do not need it.
- On supported models, a lower refresh rate can reduce demand, though scrolling may look less smooth.
Motorola lists screen brightness, timeout, live wallpapers and video use among factors that affect battery life in its battery-life recommendations.

Limit only the background activity you can live without
Adaptive Battery can limit infrequently used apps. Some Motorola models also offer Manage background apps: Smart use lets the phone restrict apps it judges excessive; Always allow is a better fit for apps whose alerts or work must arrive promptly; and Don’t allow prevents background activity, which can delay notifications, updates and new content until you open the app. Do not disable background activity across the board if timely alerts matter.

Automatic sync is another optional trade-off: reducing or turning it off may mean fewer automatic updates and notifications, and you may need to sync manually. Turn Bluetooth or GPS off when you are not using them, and prefer Wi-Fi where available. Motorola also identifies recording or watching video as battery-intensive activities.
Use Battery Saver when the trade-off is worthwhile
Battery Saver is useful when you need to stretch a charge, not as a universal performance setting. Depending on model and mode, it may use Dark theme, lower refresh rate, pause background refresh, restrict other background activity, or stop using Location while the screen is off. Maximum mode restricts more than Standard mode. Some models also expose options such as limiting 5G; availability and labels vary. Review Motorola’s Battery Saver instructions, and consider whether restrictions could interfere with navigation, messages or other time-sensitive tasks.

Test whether a downloaded app is the cause
If sluggishness or rapid drain began after installing an app, use Safe mode as a diagnostic. Motorola says Safe mode starts the phone with original software and apps only; downloaded apps and widgets are unavailable or disabled during the test. If the symptom disappears, a downloaded third-party app is probably responsible—not conclusively identified as the cause, but a useful lead.
- Enter Safe mode using the instructions for your model in Motorola’s Safe mode guide.
- Use the phone long enough to check whether the lag or drain still occurs.
- Restart normally. If the issue was absent in Safe mode, uninstall recently downloaded apps one at a time, checking the phone after each removal.
If the problem persists in Safe mode, a downloaded app is less likely to explain it. Safe mode does not establish that the hardware is healthy.

Update, restart and let an overheated phone cool
Restart the phone and check for available system and app updates. Motorola recommends keeping the phone updated for best performance, but an update is not guaranteed to be available for every model or to resolve a particular symptom. OS update timing can differ by model, region and distribution channel because Motorola works with carriers and other partners on testing and certification. Heat can accompany heavy use and affect charging and other functions. Pause resource-intensive apps until the phone cools, lower brightness, keep it out of direct heat, and avoid charging it in a poorly ventilated place. If it is hot while idle, restart it. Motorola’s guidance for a warm or hot phone recommends the supplied charger or a compatible charger.

Check battery health before seeking a replacement
On models where it is available, the Device Help app includes a battery hardware test. Motorola’s guidance says a PASS indicates no battery problem was found by that test; a failed result calls for an authorized service center. A passing result does not explain every cause of rapid drain, so return to Battery usage and the Safe mode check. Diagnostic availability and service options depend on model and location.
Leave a factory reset as a last resort
Before considering a reset, restart, check for updates, review available storage and investigate app behavior. A factory reset erases downloaded apps and user data, so back up anything you need first. Use it only after less disruptive troubleshooting or with support guidance. For persistent heat, unexpected shutdowns, charging problems or a failed battery test, contact Motorola support or an authorized service provider rather than choosing a model-unspecified replacement battery.
