Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTest representative people as they perform meaningful tasks, then measure whether they reach the intended outcomes, how much time and effort it takes, and how the interaction affects them. Define the users, goals and conditions first: an interface can work well for one group or task and poorly for another.
“Humane” is broader than fast completion or a high satisfaction score. A useful evaluation also asks whether people can understand and learn the system, stay in control, recover from mistakes, access what they need and avoid unreasonable workload or harm.
Start with users, tasks and context
Usability is not an absolute property of a screen. ISO frames it as the extent to which specified users can achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction in a specified context of use. Results may change with the user group, task or conditions, so describe each before testing. ISO 9241-11
- Users: Identify relevant experience, roles and accessibility needs.
- Goals and tasks: Choose work people genuinely need to do, not merely actions that are easy to demonstrate.
- Context: Include technical, physical, social, cultural and organizational conditions that could affect use.
A result from one group completing a narrow set of tasks does not establish that the interface is usable for everyone.

Define success before a test
For every task, write down the correct end state and any outcome that would count as unacceptable. NIST’s healthcare usability guide, for example, treats an appointment task as successful only when the specified appointment is actually confirmed—not simply because a user clicked through the expected steps. Adapt that logic to the product being evaluated. NIST’s EHR usability guide
Record complete success, partial completion and failure distinctly. Where it matters, also capture assistance, wrong turns, incorrect results and recovery. This prevents a fast but incorrect path from being counted as a good outcome.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Measure effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction
These three dimensions provide a practical core for usability measurement. Agree on observable measures and desired target values before evaluation; ISO’s human-centred quality guidance describes success criteria in those terms. ISO 9241-222
| Dimension | What to measure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Effectiveness | Task completion, accuracy, completeness and errors. | Did people achieve the intended result correctly? |
| Efficiency | Time and effort in relation to successful outcomes; include other resources, such as cost, only when relevant. | How much did it take to achieve the result? Do not reward speed when the outcome is wrong. |
| Satisfaction | People’s reported physical, cognitive and emotional responses after realistic use. | Did the experience meet their needs and expectations? Interpret reports alongside observed behavior. |
For each task, useful evidence includes completion rate, correct and incorrect outcomes, elapsed time, assistance needed, errors and recovery. State how “success” is defined so that a percentage or average has a clear meaning. NIST’s guide discusses task success and related usability measures in its EHR evaluation context. Check whether the interface supports human agency
Numbers show what happened; observation and follow-up questions can help explain whether people understood the system and felt able to direct their work. ISO 9241-110 names seven interaction principles that can guide this review. ISO 9241-110
- Suitability for the user’s tasks: Does the interaction fit the work people need to do?
- Self-descriptiveness: Can users understand what is happening and what they can do next?
- Conformity with user expectations: Does the system behave in ways users can reasonably anticipate?
- Learnability: Can people acquire the knowledge and skills needed to use it?
- Controllability: Can users direct the interaction and its pace?
- Use-error robustness: Does the design help prevent, detect and recover from unintended outcomes?
- User engagement: Does interaction support a positive, appropriate experience?
Use these principles as prompts for finding problems, not as a single score or a guarantee that one design feature satisfies a whole principle. ISO uses the term “use error” for an action or omission that leads to a result different from the one intended by the manufacturer or expected by the user; the wording avoids placing blame on the person using the system.

Assess workload, accessibility and possible harm separately
The NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) is a subjective workload assessment tool with six dimensions: mental demand, physical demand, temporal demand, performance, effort and frustration. These are categories to assess, not a population statistic or a stand-alone measure of interface quality. NASA Task Load Index
NASA human-performance guidance pairs workload measures with usability and design-induced error evaluation. For a general software product, use the same complementary logic: measure task outcomes and errors as well as reported workload. Identify accessibility barriers and plausible adverse effects for the product’s actual users and setting; a generic usability result does not establish that these have been addressed. Compare interfaces on equal terms
When comparing versions or products, keep the user group, task, context and success definitions as consistent as possible. Review the measures together rather than letting one favorable number stand for the whole experience.
- Accurate, successful completion of the intended task.
- Time and effort per successful outcome.
- How often errors occur, how serious they are and whether users can recover.
- Satisfaction and perceived workload.
- Whether people can understand, learn and control the interaction.
- Relevant accessibility barriers and adverse effects in the product’s real setting.
A faster interface may still be less humane if it creates more errors, frustration, exclusion or loss of control. That conclusion follows from considering these as separate dimensions; it is not a universal empirical finding.
Report findings and repeat the evaluation
Report results by task and user group, alongside the context, sample and method. Include the success definitions and target values so readers can see what the measures mean. Use findings to improve the design and evaluate it again. NASA Ames describes user research, interaction design and usability evaluation as an iterative process, while NASA guidance calls for human-in-the-loop evaluation during design. NASA Ames Human-Computer Interaction and NASA-STD-3001, Volume 2
Do not mistake a specialized benchmark for a universal score
There is no validated universal “humane interface” score established by these sources. NASA-STD-3001 includes a requirement for NASA crew interfaces to achieve a minimum average satisfaction score of 85 on the NASA Modified System Usability Scale (NMSUS). That is a crew-interface requirement, not a general target for consumer or workplace software. NASA-STD-3001, Volume 2
Likewise, ISO’s human-centred design framing emphasizes users, their needs and requirements, and the application of human-factors, ergonomics and usability knowledge. It treats usability, accessibility, user experience and avoidance of harm as related aspects, while recognizing that design can manage only aspects within its influence. The measures and potential harms therefore need to be specific to the product and environment. ISO 9241-222
