To back up your Google Keep notes, export Keep through Google Takeout. The export can include note text and lists, attachments, colors, pinned and archived status, collaborators, and labels. It is a downloadable copy, not a confirmed one-click restore: keep the archive somewhere separate from the Google Account you are backing up, and check the destination app’s import support before planning a migration.
Export all your Keep notes with Google Takeout
- Sign in to the Google Account that owns the notes, then open Google’s Keep export page and start the data export.
- Select Keep in the product list. Review the selected products rather than assuming the defaults are right for your account.
- Continue to the archive settings, choose a delivery method, and create the export. Google prepares the archive and provides instructions for downloading it.
- Download the archive when it is ready. Google recommends downloading and viewing Takeout exports on a desktop computer; see How to download your Google data for the general Takeout workflow.
- For an independent backup, store the downloaded archive somewhere separate from the Google Account being backed up. This is general backup practice, not a Google guarantee.
Google says downloading your data does not delete it from its servers. The archive may not include changes made between your request and the archive’s creation, so it is a snapshot rather than a guarantee of every change made while the export is being prepared. Deleted data is not included. On a work or school account, an administrator may restrict downloads, and some data may be unavailable.
What the Keep export includes
Google lists these categories in a Keep export: note content (including text and list items), attachments (including voice recordings, drawings, and images), note color, pinned and archived state, note collaborators, and your list of note labels. The export covers data that has not been deleted. Google’s Keep export help also notes that some data may be unavailable to work or school account users.
Google’s export documentation describes the data included, but does not establish a direct restore procedure or a specific archive layout. Do not assume the downloaded archive can be imported back into Keep—or into another notes app—without checking that destination’s current instructions.

Copy one Keep note to Google Docs or another app
For a single note rather than a full archive, Google’s computer instructions let you copy a Keep note on the web as a Google Doc. On Android, you can copy a note to Google Docs or send it through another app. Follow the platform-specific steps in Google’s guides for computer or Android. These options handle a note at a time; they are not a substitute for exporting the whole Keep account.
Download a note’s text from version history
On a computer, open the note’s More menu, choose Version history, select a version, and download it. Google says version history covers previous text changes only: “Images won’t appear in version history.” See Find version history for notes for Google’s instructions. This can help retrieve earlier text, but it does not preserve images or provide a full backup of the note.

For developers: retrieve attachments through the Keep API
Google documents an attachment-media download method in the Keep API reference. It requires an authorized request and a supported MIME type, so it is relevant when building a developer retrieval workflow—not the default approach for consumers who want an account export.

Keep the backup usable
- Confirm you exported from the account that owns the notes.
- Store the downloaded archive separately from that account if you need an independent copy.
- For migration, verify the destination service’s current import support before relying on a particular export format or expecting a one-click transfer.
- If the account belongs to an organization, ask its administrator if Takeout downloads are restricted.
