Microsoft documents this as mode selection and chat continuation—not as a guarantee that every detail of the underlying model context transfers unchanged.
Can you switch models in the same Copilot conversation?
In consumer Microsoft Copilot, the documented control is a conversation-mode selector, not a universal picker for arbitrary named models. Microsoft lists Quick response, Think Deeper, Study and learn, Smart, and Search. Smart is identified as using GPT-5; Think Deeper is described as powered by the latest reasoning models from OpenAI. Microsoft does not identify a specific underlying model for every mode in this guidance. Microsoft’s conversation-mode guide is the best reference for the current choices.
You can select a mode before your next prompt and keep chatting in that conversation. Microsoft says a selected mode remains active until you disable it and supports follow-up questions in that mode. This supports continuing the thread, but does not establish that every hidden context detail, attachment, or intermediate state will be identical after a mode change.
How to change modes in consumer Copilot without losing the chat
- Open the conversation you want to continue. If it is already on screen, stay in that thread. If you are returning later, open it from Copilot history while signed in.
- Find the mode control under the prompt. Microsoft’s instructions describe the control as “Quick response.” Select it to view the modes available to your account, which may include Quick response, Think Deeper, Study and learn, Smart, and Search.
- Choose a mode before submitting your next prompt. Then send the question or instruction in the same conversation. The selected mode remains active until disabled, according to Microsoft.
- Check the reply and clarify if needed. If the response no longer reflects important details from earlier in the thread, restate the goal and constraints in your next message. That is practical advice, not a Microsoft guarantee about context transfer.
Mode availability can depend on sign-in and may differ across accounts or rollout stages. If the labels or controls in your app do not match these instructions, use the control currently shown under your prompt.

Which Copilot mode should you choose?

These descriptions reflect Microsoft Support’s current documentation; the modes shown and their availability may vary. The documentation does not provide a comparative response-time measurement, so treat “quick” and “deeper” as descriptions of intended behavior rather than guaranteed timings.
How to continue a previous chat in Copilot
Consumer Microsoft Copilot
Signed-in users can revisit conversations from Copilot history and continue them. Microsoft says consumer Copilot history retains the last 18 months of interactions; the page does not state a publication year for that retention figure. Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat
In Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, use the Chats list to select an existing conversation, review it, or continue chatting. Microsoft separately describes personalization based on chat history; that feature is not the same as reopening the full original thread. Some work-content capabilities depend on your Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription and organization plan. See Microsoft’s guide to Copilot Chat history.
What “keeping the same context” does—and does not—mean
Reopening a saved thread lets you continue that conversation and its visible history. Microsoft’s mode and history instructions do not promise that switching a mode preserves every element of underlying model context unchanged. A new chat is also different from personalization based on selected insights from past chats: personalization does not reopen the entire prior conversation.

- For continuity: return to the existing thread through history or the Chats list.
- For a different response approach: use the mode selector available in that thread before sending your next prompt.
- If a detail matters: repeat essential context, constraints, or attachment references in your next message rather than assuming they carried over perfectly.
Why your Copilot controls may look different
Copilot’s features and labels can vary by product, account type, platform, and rollout. Microsoft’s app-change page says the updated Copilot app was available from August 18, 2026, and describes retired features and temporary availability gaps during rollout. Consult Microsoft’s Copilot app updates page if a mode or history control is missing. When continuity is important, open the existing conversation from history instead of starting a new chat.
