You can explore the 1986 BBC Domesday Project online in a browser through the Centre for Computing History’s emulator. It offers three emulated discs—Community North, Community South and National A—and the museum says you do not need extra software. You can also view working systems at the museum in Cambridge; Domesday86 is a separate option for people interested in preservation and the original technology.

The museum describes this as a modified BeebEm emulator with an emulated LVROM device, compiled to WebAssembly. It says the emulator runs in a standard browser without additional requirements, so you do not need to buy a BBC Master computer, a LaserDisc player or original discs to try this route.

The Centre for Computing History says visitors can access working BBC Domesday systems at its Cambridge museum. It describes three systems, with discs and other media. Check the museum’s current visiting information before setting out, since opening arrangements and access details can change.

Use Domesday86 for preservation and technical material
Domesday86 is a preservation project, not the same service as the museum’s browser emulator. It aims to recreate the original experience using modern hardware and software, and documents preserved BBC Domesday AIV LaserDisc samples and tools for decoding them. Its site reports that more than 9,000 schools contributed to the Community LaserDiscs, a historical figure published in 2019. This route is most relevant if you want to understand the system and its preservation rather than simply open a disc in a browser.
Is BBC Domesday Reloaded still available?
Domesday Reloaded was a later online project that let people browse pictures and text from the 1986 archive, search by location and contribute updates. The BBC and The National Archives described it in a booklet about the 2011-era service. That historical account does not establish that a searchable Reloaded website remains available today, nor does it confirm a current searchable replacement from The National Archives. Treat Reloaded as historical context rather than a verified current access route.

What the 1986 project contains
The BBC launched its Domesday Project in 1986 to mark 900 years since William the Conqueror’s original Domesday Book. The BBC and The National Archives’ account of the project reported that more than one million people contributed, with more than 9,000 schools contributing to the Community LaserDiscs according to Domesday86’s 2019 account. These describe different aspects of participation and should not be treated as one count.
The BBC and The National Archives booklet also reported 23,000 “Domesday Squares,” each described as a 4 × 3 km area; more than 108,000 square km surveyed; more than 147,819 pages of text articles; and 23,225 amateur photographs. These are historical figures reported by that booklet, not a fresh count of what is currently accessible through the emulator.

The 1986 project is distinct from the medieval Domesday Book. Its connection is commemorative: the project marked the 900th anniversary of the earlier survey. Buying a modern edition of the medieval book will not provide access to the BBC archive.

The original project relied on BBC Master computers and LV-ROM LaserDiscs, a combination that is difficult to preserve. The Centre for Computing History notes that original LV-ROM players are scarce and that discs are beginning to suffer. For ordinary exploration, the emulator avoids requiring that aging hardware; preservation work such as Domesday86 addresses a different need.
