To remap buttons on Nintendo Switch 2, open HOME > System Settings > Accessibility > Button Mapping, select a connected controller, choose Edit Controller Mapping, assign the new inputs, and select Save. For only swapping A and B, use System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Swap A and B Button mapping instead; that shortcut is separate from full remapping.
Remap buttons on a connected controller
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Accessibility > Button Mapping.
- Choose the controller you want to change, then select Edit Controller Mapping. Only controllers currently connected to the console appear in this list.
- Select the button whose behavior you want to change, then select the button input to assign to it.
- Select Save to apply the mapping.
To restore the standard layout later, return to Button Mapping and select Reset Controller Mapping. Resetting does not delete registered presets. Nintendo Support places Button Mapping under Accessibility in its System Settings guide.
Swap A and B without changing other buttons
If you only want to exchange the A and B button functions, open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Swap A and B Button mapping. This dedicated setting is distinct from the full Button Mapping editor under Accessibility. Nintendo’s System Settings overview lists the two options in those separate locations.
Which buttons and controllers can be remapped?
Buttons and stick assignments
Nintendo allows remapping of buttons other than POWER, Volume, HOME, and SYNC. Those excluded functions cannot be reassigned to another button. Stick directional motion cannot be converted into button inputs, but the left- and right-stick inputs can be reassigned to the opposite sides. Changing which stick side is used on Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con requires a dual-controller grip.

Supported controllers
Button Mapping supports Joy-Con 2, Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, Nintendo Switch Joy-Con, and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Nintendo also says Nintendo Switch Lite buttons can be remapped. The Switch 2 menu lists only controllers connected at the time, so connect the controller you want to configure before opening its mapping options.
Save and load controller-specific presets
You can save up to five button-mapping presets per controller, then load a saved preset from the Button Mapping menu. Each controller must be configured separately, but a saved configuration can be loaded onto another controller of the same type. Custom configurations are stored on the console rather than the controller, so they do not travel with a controller to a different system.

Once applied, a custom mapping works in nearly all console situations, including games, the eShop, and the HOME Menu. Nintendo says mapping is disabled in some tests and calibration procedures.
Use Quick Settings and configure GL/GR buttons
Open Quick Settings
Press and hold the HOME button for at least one second to open Quick Settings. First enable Button Mapping in System Settings; after that, Quick Settings can take you to the mapping menu or let you switch saved presets.

Assign GL/GR buttons while playing
When compatible software is running, GL/GR buttons on the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller and Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip can be assigned to other buttons from Quick Settings. These assignments are saved per game and per user, and are shared across different compatible controllers. Nintendo’s guide specifies that GL/GR mapping is available from Quick Settings while playing a game.

A wrench icon beside the controller in use means at least one button has been remapped or disabled. After waking the console from sleep, you may also see the message “The Connected Controller’s Button Mapping Changed.” The prompt lets you reset the controller to factory settings or continue using the custom mapping. If a controller seems unresponsive, Nintendo recommends restoring standard inputs before troubleshooting the hardware.
