Field hockey and ice hockey are different sports, not variations of the same game: field hockey is played on a field with a hard ball and running players, while ice hockey is played on ice with skates and a rubber puck. That difference shapes the equipment, scoring rules and pace of play. This comparison uses the International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) 2026 outdoor 11-a-side rules and the International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) 2026 terminology; local competitions may use different rules.
Field hockey vs. ice hockey at a glance
| Feature | Field hockey | Ice hockey |
|---|---|---|
| Surface and movement | Players run on a rectangular field measuring 91.40 m by 55.00 m under FIH outdoor specifications. | Players skate on an ice rink divided into zones by blue lines. |
| Object of play | A hard, spherical ball, usually white or another colour that contrasts with the surface. | A black vulcanised-rubber puck, 2.5 cm thick and 7.6 cm in diameter, weighing 155–170 g, according to IIHF terminology. |
| Stick | A field-hockey stick has a handle and a shaped head; players use it to play the ball. | An ice-hockey stick has a curved blade for carrying, passing and shooting the puck. Goalkeeper sticks have a different blade and shaft. |
| Players and regulation format | FIH outdoor rules allow a maximum of 11 players per side on the field. Matches have four 15-minute quarters. | IIHF terminology describes three 20-minute regulation periods, or 60 minutes in total. Overtime depends on the competition. |
| Scoring and key rules | For a goal, an attacker must play the ball from within the circle, and it must cross the goal-line without leaving the circle first. Free hits, penalty corners and penalty strokes are important restarts or penalties. | Teams try to shoot the puck into the opposing net. Blue-line offside, icing, face-offs and penalties that can create power plays shape play. |
Why does field hockey have a scoring circle?
Under the FIH’s 2026 outdoor rules, a goal counts only if an attacker plays the ball while it is inside the circle and the ball passes fully over the goal-line beneath the crossbar without leaving the circle on the way. The circle therefore defines where the scoring play must begin; simply shooting from elsewhere on the field does not meet this condition.
Field hockey also restricts how outfield players use their bodies. They must not stop, kick, propel, pick up, throw or carry the ball with the body to gain an advantage. Body contact is not automatically a foul in every instance: the circumstances matter, including whether the player gained an advantage or deliberately positioned their body to stop the ball. Players must not obstruct an opponent trying to play the ball, such as by shielding it from a legitimate tackle.

Free hits, penalty corners and penalty strokes are central to field-hockey play. A penalty corner can follow certain defending offences in the circle or specified intentional defending plays over the back-line. It is a set-piece situation, not an ice-hockey face-off. Under FIH rules, a penalty corner or the penalty stroke that follows it can extend a period.

How do ice-hockey rules differ?
Ice hockey organizes play around the rink’s zones and blue lines. Under IIHF terminology, an attacking player is offside if their skates cross the plane of the opponent’s blue line before the puck enters the attacking zone. Icing is another rink-specific rule. Face-offs restart play, while penalties can leave one team with a power play and the other shorthanded.
In contrast to field hockey’s circle-based goal condition, the key distinctions highlighted in the IIHF terminology are the puck, rink zones and offside. Exact procedures and competition formats should be checked in the applicable ice-hockey rulebook: the IIHF says its latest published edition applies to IIHF events and championships, and the edition currently listed is 2026/27, while other leagues and associations may set their own rules.

How long is a game in each sport?
Field hockey: four quarters
FIH outdoor 11-a-side matches consist of four 15-minute quarters. The standard intervals are two minutes between the first and second quarters and between the third and fourth, with a 10-minute half-time. The FIH’s 2026 international rules took effect on 1 March 2026; national associations choose their own implementation date.
Ice hockey: three regulation periods
IIHF terminology describes three 20-minute regulation periods. Overtime may follow if the competition requires a winner, but its format is not universal; check the rules for the specific league or tournament.

What equipment does each sport use?
Field hockey equipment
Field players use a stick designed for controlling a hard ball on a field, rather than a puck on ice. The ball is spherical and hard; FIH specifications call for it to be white unless another contrasting colour is agreed for the playing surface. Stick design is governed by detailed FIH specifications.
Ice hockey equipment
Ice-hockey players wear skates to move on the rink and use a curved-blade stick to handle the puck. The puck’s flat, dense rubber construction suits play on ice. Goalkeeper sticks differ from those used by other players.

Choose equipment for the sport, role and rules

Protective-equipment requirements can vary by role, age, gender category and competition. Confirm fit, safety certification and local requirements with a club or governing body; there is no single equipment checklist that applies to every player in either sport.
