Build a reliable push pass and controlled first touch before adding speed or complexity. A good pass has suitable pace and accuracy; a good reception controls the ball while setting up the next action. Practise first without pressure, then receive and pass while moving.

Start with a controlled push pass

The push pass is a useful foundation for short-range passing. USA Field Hockey describes it as commonly used over shorter distances and quick because it has no backswing, making it a practical option when you want to move the ball promptly. The coaching cues below come from its Core Skills of Field Hockey guide.

  1. Stand side-on to the target, with your left shoulder facing it, and your feet about shoulder-width apart.
  2. Place the stick on the ball rather than taking a backswing.
  3. Push through the ball as your weight shifts from your right foot to your left.
  4. Follow through toward the receiver, then be ready for the next action.

Judge the pass by its result as well as your technique: send it accurately at a pace your teammate can control. Practise off either foot so you can maintain control when your position changes.

Choose the pass for the situation

A push pass is not the only option. USA Field Hockey also describes the forehand sweep as a more powerful, more advanced pass for medium or longer distances on flat surfaces. It calls for a low body position, hands low, space between your body and the ball, and a sweeping action.

Technique Best fit What it asks of you
Push pass Shorter distances and quick release Stick on the ball, weight transfer, and a follow-through toward the target; no backswing
Forehand sweep Medium or longer distances on a flat surface Lower body position, hands low, room between body and ball, and a sweeping motion

Use the push pass to establish control before adding the sweep. A hit involves a backswing and needs time and space, so treat it as a separate skill rather than mixing its mechanics into beginner push-pass practice.

Make your first touch prepare the next action

Receiving is more than stopping the ball. Aim to bring it under control in a position that lets you pass, carry, or otherwise continue play. USA Field Hockey’s receiving guidance emphasizes watching the ball, staying balanced, positioning your body behind it, and keeping your hands away from your body.

  • Perfect way to outfit your young player for their first practice
  • Move your feet and body into line with the ball rather than reaching with the stick alone.
  • Angle the stick forward as you meet the ball. The guide says this helps reduce rebound and keep the ball grounded and controlled.
  • Adjust to the pass you actually receive. Feeds may arrive slightly to either side, so practise moving your body and stick to meet them.
  • Once your control is steady, receive while moving. The guide recommends receiving on the move, ideally with your feet facing forward toward your goal, so you are better prepared for what follows.

Practise forehand and reverse-stick receiving. Add lifted passes only when they suit your level and you have a safe practice setting; a lifted ball is a different receiving challenge from a grounded pass.

  1. Pass in pairs while stationary. Start close enough to keep the exchange controlled. Focus on side-on alignment, no backswing, weight transfer, and a follow-through toward your partner.
  2. Receive and return. Set a balanced base, watch the incoming ball, cushion it with a forward-angled stick, then return a controlled pass. Keep the ball playable for your next action rather than simply stopping it.
  3. Vary the feed. Send passes slightly to either side so the receiver has to adjust their feet, body, and stick. This makes practice more like the imperfect feeds players need to handle.
  4. Move into the pass. Have the receiver move toward the ball, control it, and continue forward. Add passing while moving once the basic exchange is repeatable.
  5. Add direction. The FIH Academy’s Start Hockey Skills Challenge includes passing forward, left, and right while moving, as well as short-range receiving tasks. Its activities have three difficulty levels and are designed to work for individuals or groups with limited equipment.

Keep the challenge appropriate to the player’s control. Increase movement or directional demands only when the player can still make a controlled pass and take a useful first touch.

What you need to practise

A field hockey stick and ball are enough for repeated passing and receiving practice; the FIH challenge also emphasizes adapting activities with limited equipment. USA Field Hockey notes that players often prefer a stick approximately hip height, but sticks vary in length, weight, material, bow, and design, so no single specification suits everyone. A wall or rebounder can be an optional way to practise alone, though the cited coaching materials do not recommend a specific one.
