To install a video doorbell, first identify its exact model and choose the correct power path: battery or existing doorbell wiring. For a wired model, check the transformer and chime against that model’s official requirements, then shut off power at the breaker before handling wires. Mount the doorbell using its app-guided instructions, restore power when installation is complete, and use the manufacturer’s app to connect it to Wi-Fi and test the camera, notifications, and chime.

1. Identify the doorbell and choose a power path

Find the full model name and generation on the device, packaging, or manufacturer’s app. Requirements can differ even between products from the same brand, and some manufacturers publish different requirements for different regions. Use the installation instructions and compatibility information for your exact model rather than relying on wire colors or a general rule.

Installation path What it needs Best fit
Battery-powered A charged battery; some models can also be connected to existing wiring or a compatible chime. Homes without compatible doorbell wiring, or installations where avoiding wiring work is preferable.
Wired Compatible low-voltage power, and possibly a compatible indoor chime or model-specific chime connector. Homes with existing wiring that meets the exact doorbell’s power and chime requirements.

A battery model may not need system wires to operate, but optional hardwiring or chime behavior varies by model. For example, Ring’s hardwiring instructions for battery-powered models include model-specific chime settings. Follow those instructions if you connect one to existing wiring.

2. Check wired power and chime compatibility

Before buying accessories or connecting a wired doorbell, compare the existing transformer’s voltage and VA rating with the exact model’s official requirements. Check whether the manufacturer requires an indoor chime connector, a particular chime type, or an app setting for mechanical, digital, or no chime. Google Nest notes that transformers may be inside the chime, near the breaker or fuse box, in a basement, or in a crawl space.

  • Get real-time alerts — Receive real-time notifications on your phone when motion is detected.
  • Easily recharge — Simply insert the included removal tool to detach your doorbell from the wall, then recharge the built-in battery via USB-C. (Cable not included.)

3. Prepare safely before mounting

For a battery-powered doorbell

  • Charge or install the battery as directed by the model’s instructions.
  • Use only the included or model-compatible mounting plate, screws, wedges, and other parts.
  • If you plan to connect existing wiring or use an indoor chime, follow that model’s hardwiring directions; battery power does not make live wiring safe to touch.

For a wired doorbell

  1. Open the manufacturer’s compatibility and installation instructions for the exact model.
  2. Turn off the doorbell circuit at the breaker before removing the old button or handling conductors. Arlo warns: “Failure to turn off the power may result in severe injury.”
  3. Follow the manufacturer’s directions to confirm the old doorbell is no longer energized or ringing before disconnecting it.
  4. Keep conductors secure so they cannot slip back into the wall. Use only the included or explicitly compatible connectors, adapters, and chime parts.

If you cannot confidently identify the circuit, transformer, or wiring, stop and get qualified help rather than working on live or uncertain wiring.

4. Mount the doorbell and complete the app setup

  1. Start in the manufacturer’s app. Choose the correct household or location, select the exact device, and follow its installation flow. Google says its app is the primary guide for connecting a Nest Doorbell to Wi-Fi and setting it up.
  2. Attach the mounting hardware. Use the position and orientation shown in the model’s instructions. Secure any exposed conductors and avoid pinching them behind the device.
  3. Connect wiring only if the model requires it. With breaker power off, connect the conductors using the specified terminals and connectors. Install a required chime connector or power kit as directed; do not substitute a part from another model.
  4. Fasten the doorbell. Attach it to the mounting plate and secure it with the supplied hardware. For a battery installation, confirm the battery is seated and the device is firmly mounted.
  5. Restore power after the physical installation is complete. Then return to the app to pair the doorbell, select the Wi-Fi network, and enter its password.
  6. Test the system. Check live view, motion or doorbell notifications, and indoor chime behavior. Set the chime type in the app if required by your model.

5. Connect it to the right Wi-Fi network

Check the doorbell’s instructions for supported Wi-Fi bands before setup; do not assume every doorbell uses the same band. For example, Arlo specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for its Essential Wired model. That is a model-specific requirement, not a rule for all video doorbells.

6. Fix setup, power, or video problems

The app cannot find or connect to the doorbell

  • Wait briefly and retry the app’s pairing step.
  • Move the router and doorbell closer during setup, then reduce distance or interference where practical.
  • Restart the router and try again.
  • If the network is hidden, enter its SSID manually where the app provides that option.
  • Confirm the network band matches the model’s requirements and that the password is correct.

The doorbell will not power on or reports low power

For a wired model, confirm the breaker is on and, without touching live conductors, check that installation connections are seated as the manufacturer directs. Recheck the transformer and chime against the exact model’s requirements. Shut power off at the breaker before inspecting or adjusting wiring; if the cause is unclear, contact a qualified professional.

Live video is weak, delayed, or unreliable

Investigate both Wi-Fi signal and power. Google identifies weak wireless signal and insufficient power as possible causes of poor connection or video quality. Move the router closer, reduce interference, and restart it; if the problem remains, verify that the wired model receives compatible power.

The indoor chime does not work correctly

Check the model’s instructions for a required chime connector or power kit, and confirm the app is set to the correct mechanical, digital, or no-chime option. Google says a connector is required for specified wired models and protects the chime. Ring cautions that selecting the wrong in-home chime setting can damage the device, so do not experiment with settings outside the model’s guidance.
