For California’s November 3, 2026 General Election, active registered voters do not usually need to request a mail ballot: counties must begin mailing one to every active registered voter by October 5. Complete and sign the return envelope, then mail it or deliver it to an official location. Mail ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received within seven days; in-person returns are due by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. Use the state’s Where’s My Ballot? service for updates.

Do you need to request a California mail ballot?

If you are actively registered to vote in California, a ballot is mailed to you automatically. For the November 3, 2026 General Election, counties must begin mailing ballots by October 5. You generally do not need to submit a separate mail-ballot request.

If your ballot does not arrive, or it is lost or damaged, contact your county elections office to ask for a replacement. The state guide says replacement requests may be made by phone, email, fax, or another electronic means; check with your county for its process.

For this election, the ordinary voter-registration deadline is October 19, 2026. Conditional voter registration is available from October 20 through Election Day. Check your registration and county-specific details with the California Secretary of State.

How to complete and return your ballot

  1. Mark the ballot. Follow the instructions included with it and review your choices before placing it in the return envelope.
  2. Seal and sign the return envelope. Complete the envelope as instructed, including its signature and date fields. Election officials compare the envelope signature with the signature on your voter registration record before separating the ballot from the envelope for tallying.
  3. Choose a return method and meet its deadline. Use the prepaid, First-Class postage return envelope to mail your ballot, or deliver it to an official drop box, polling place, vote center, or county elections office.

How can I return my ballot?

California provides a postage-paid return envelope, so you do not need to buy postage for your ballot. You can mail the sealed envelope or use an official in-person option. Compare the deadlines carefully: mailed ballots and in-person deliveries follow different rules.

Return method Deadline for November 3, 2026 Practical detail
Mail Postmarked on or before November 3 and received by the county elections office no later than seven days after Election Day. Use the supplied prepaid envelope. Mail as early as possible; postal delivery timing is not guaranteed.
Official drop box, polling place, vote center, or county elections office Delivered by 8:00 p.m. on November 3. Confirm available locations and hours with your county elections office.

When should you mail it?

The Secretary of State advises mailing as soon as the ballot is ready. Its USPS FAQ advises mailing at least five days before Election Day to help ensure an Election Day postmark, while the 2026 voter guide advises mailing seven days in advance. These are early-mail recommendations, not guarantees of postal delivery by a particular date. If you are unsure you can get a timely postmark, use an official in-person return option by its deadline.

For the current election’s dates and statewide instructions, see the Secretary of State’s voting guide and vote-by-mail information. Check with your county for local drop-off locations.
