Retail stores use cameras as visual sensors: AI software analyzes their images or video to flag likely shelf gaps and misplaced products, estimate shopper traffic and movement, and monitor queues. The result is an operational signal for staff or store systems—not a perfect inventory count, a complete record of customer intent, or proof that every shopper is identified.
How camera-based retail analytics works
A typical system combines cameras aimed at shelves, entrances, aisles, or checkout areas with AI models that detect people, products, shelf conditions, or activity. Software turns those detections into alerts or summarized measurements in a dashboard or an existing inventory workflow. The camera supplies the visual input; the analytics and integrations turn it into something a store can act on.
Processing can happen on an edge device in the store, in the cloud, or through a combination of both. AWS describes a reference design using Power over Ethernet (PoE) cameras connected to an on-premises Panorama device, with additional streaming and storage components downstream. That is one architecture, not a requirement for every deployment. AWS retail computer-vision reference architecture
What stores can measure
Shelf and product conditions
A camera positioned to see a shelf can help flag likely empty spaces, low stock, products in the wrong place, or other conditions for an employee to check. It does not replenish the shelf by itself, and the image may not reveal the actual quantity in back-room storage. What the system can detect depends on the view, lighting, obstructions, and how it is configured.

Customer traffic and movement
Traffic-oriented analytics can estimate how many people pass an entrance or area, how shoppers move through a store, which zones are busy, and how long people remain in an area. They can also help monitor checkout queues. These are measurements of visible activity, not a direct explanation of why a shopper stopped, what they intended to buy, or whether they made a purchase.
Shelf monitoring and traffic analysis are related but distinct jobs. A camera view suited to checking shelf facings may not cover an entrance or queue, and a traffic count does not establish which products are available. AWS lists aisle traffic, customer movement, shelf and product interaction, checkout queues, loss-prevention patterns, and inventory management among possible use cases for its architecture. Examples from retailer deployments
Published examples show how stores apply these systems, but reported outcomes come from the companies or vendors describing the deployments. They should not be treated as independent benchmarks or guaranteed results for another retailer.

| Sam’s Groceria stores | UST says it installed 15 smart cameras per store to gather shopper headcounts, customer flow, dwell times in store areas, and on-shelf inventory. UST reports a 25% reduction in operational costs, a 20% increase in sales and reduction in shrinkage, and a 15% improvement in employee productivity. | These are figures published by UST in its case study; the page does not state a year. The combined “20% increase in sales and reduction in shrinkage” should not be read as two separately verified causal effects. UST case study |
| Conad Superstore, Sorbolo | VusionGroup says the store installed 100 shelf cameras for its Captana shelf-monitoring solution, giving associates better visibility of shelf conditions and out-of-stocks. | This is a vendor case description; the page does not state a year. VusionGroup case study |
| AiFi customer examples | Microsoft’s customer story, dated April 13, 2026, describes AiFi turning camera data into queryable, real-time intelligence. Examples include monitoring shelf availability and helping an apparel retailer see which displays drew engagement and foot traffic during a Black Friday test. It also reports 25–40% reductions in shrink as an AiFi client outcome. | The results are company/customer-reported, not independently verified. Microsoft customer story |
| Unnamed three-store pilot | Orionic describes a three-store pilot and claims improvements in restocking delay and on-shelf availability. | The retailer is not named on the page, and the stated results are vendor claims. Orionic case study |
What to check before choosing a system
A camera is an input device, not a complete inventory or traffic solution. Retailers evaluating an installation should check the whole chain from the camera view to the action a staff member can take.

- Outdoor 4 is our most affordable wireless smart security camera yet, offering up to two-year battery life for around-the-clock peace of mind. Local storage not included with Sync Module Core.
- See and speak from the Blink app — Experience 1080p HD live view, infrared night vision, and crisp two-way audio.
- Two-year battery life — Set up in minutes and get up to two years of power with the included AA Energizer lithium batteries and a Blink Sync Module Core.
- Enhanced motion detection — Be alerted to motion faster from your smartphone with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
- Person detection — Get alerts when a person is detected with embedded computer vision (CV) as part of an optional Blink Subscription Plan (sold separately).
- Coverage and placement: Confirm that cameras see the shelf faces, entrances, or queues relevant to the use case. Check for blind spots, changing light, and shoppers or displays blocking the view.
- Specific measurements: Ask whether the system detects shelf gaps and product placement, estimates traffic and movement, tracks queues, or supports another defined task. These capabilities are not interchangeable.
- Processing and data flow: Establish whether video is analyzed on an in-store edge device, in the cloud, or both; whether raw footage is retained; and what derived information is transmitted.
- Integration and follow-up: Find out how alerts reach associates and whether the system fits existing inventory or store-management workflows. A detection that does not prompt a useful action may have little operational value.
- Local validation and operating burden: Test detection performance in the actual store before scaling. Account for installation, network needs, maintenance, staffing, and costs; a vendor’s reported accuracy or business results do not establish what a new store will achieve.
- Privacy and governance: Define the purpose, notice, lawful basis, access controls, retention, and security for the system, and review requirements in each jurisdiction where it will operate.
Privacy: traffic counting is not the same as identifying people
Video can involve personal data, depending on what a system captures and processes. In the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) says its video-surveillance guidance covers organizations processing personal data through CCTV and more advanced AI-based systems, and emphasizes fairness, accountability, transparency, and data protection by design. The ICO notes that this guidance is under review following changes made by the UK Data (Use and Access) Act. ICO video-surveillance guidance
For the EU, the European Data Protection Board’s April 2026 summary of its video-device guidance says GDPR applies to video surveillance and discusses lawfulness, transparency, and disclosure. It also warns that people may not expect security footage to be reused for marketing or employee monitoring. This is EU GDPR guidance, not a statement of law that applies everywhere. Aggregate traffic measurement does not inherently require facial recognition. Facial recognition analyzes facial features to create biometric templates and is a more sensitive, separate use. The ICO says uniquely identifying people with biometric data requires both a UK GDPR lawful basis and an applicable special-category condition; its current guidance checklist calls for a data-protection impact assessment and documented justification. The ICO also says this guidance is under review. ICO facial-recognition guidance
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhere PoE cameras fit
A PoE security camera, also called a PoE network camera, can provide video input for a retail computer-vision system; AWS’s reference architecture explicitly uses PoE cameras. But choosing a camera alone does not provide shelf analytics or shopper-traffic measurement. The camera must work with compatible analytics, appropriate placement and coverage, data processing, store workflows, and privacy controls.
