To set up a Fire TV Stick 4K, plug it into your TV’s HDMI port, connect power using the instructions for your generation, select that HDMI input, then join Wi-Fi and sign in to an Amazon account. You’ll need your network name and password. Amazon’s official setup guide says to “Connect your Fire TV Stick to your TV and follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.”
What you need before setup
- A TV with an available HDMI port.
- Your Fire TV Stick 4K and its included accessories.
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password.
- An Amazon account, or the ability to create one during setup.
Amazon’s accessory list for the 2nd-generation model includes an Alexa Voice Remote, power cable, adapter, AAA batteries, and an optional HDMI extender. Included accessories and power instructions can differ by generation, so use the guide and parts for your particular model.
Connect the Fire TV Stick 4K to your TV
- Install the remote batteries. Use the batteries supplied with the remote if included.
- Connect the power cable. Attach it to the Stick and the appropriate power source for your generation. See the power guidance below before choosing a TV USB port or wall outlet.
- Plug the Stick into HDMI. Choose an available HDMI port. If the Stick does not fit comfortably or nearby cables obstruct it, an HDMI extender can provide clearance; it is optional.
- Select the correct TV input. Turn on the television and use its remote to choose the HDMI input where the Fire TV Stick is connected.
Check the power instructions for your generation
Do not assume that every Fire TV Stick 4K uses the same power arrangement. Amazon’s model-specific guidance differs:
- 2nd generation: Amazon’s instructions say to connect the USB cable to the included power adapter and plug the adapter into a wall outlet. The guide advises against plugging the USB cable directly into the TV.
- 3rd generation: Amazon describes an included 1.3-foot USB-C cable connected to the TV’s USB-A port. If the cable cannot reach or the Stick reports insufficient power, Amazon says to try a USB-C cable and a 5V 1A adapter connected to a wall outlet.
If you are unsure which generation you have, check the model-specific Amazon guide and follow the on-screen prompts rather than relying on another generation’s instructions.

Fix common setup problems
The TV shows no picture
Confirm that the TV is switched to the HDMI input used by the Stick. If the remote has not paired, hold its Home button until the pairing prompt appears. Amazon specifies about 10 seconds in its 2nd-generation instructions and 10 seconds in its 3rd-generation instructions.

The Fire TV Stick won’t connect to Wi-Fi
- Unplug the Stick’s power adapter for one minute, then reconnect it and try again.
- If the connection still fails, restart the modem and router: unplug both for one minute, reconnect the modem, and wait for its internet connection. Then reconnect the router and wait for it to come back online before retrying setup.
- Move the Stick and router closer together if possible, then try again.
- If available, try Ethernet. Some Fire TV devices require an Ethernet adapter.
Amazon also lists “Network connection has been lost” among the Wi-Fi problems it addresses. If you see that message during setup, retry after the relevant connection steps above.

Do you need an HDMI extender?
No. Amazon describes the extender as useful when space around the HDMI port is limited, cables crowd the back of the TV, or a flush-mounted TV has rear-facing ports. If you already have a compatible 4K extender, Amazon says it can be used; buying one is not a required setup step.
