NHL teams do not follow one league-wide goalie rotation formula. Coaches choose a starter game by game, balancing performance, health, workload, schedule, standings and each goalie’s response to rest or frequent play. A tandem may split starts, alternate for a stretch, or give one goalie the larger share; even a back-to-back split is a common practice, not a league requirement.
What “rotation” means in the NHL
A goalie rotation is a team’s pattern for distributing starts, not necessarily strict alternation. With two viable goalies, a club might alternate, use one more often based on form or game importance, or divide a back-to-back between them and then adjust for the rest of the schedule. The Seattle Kraken’s 2022 explanation called splitting back-to-backs typical, while also describing how tandem usage can vary. Seattle Kraken, “Examining Goalie Workload”
There is no published NHL-wide percentage split or workload cutoff in the sources cited here. Nor do they establish a league rule requiring every team to split consecutive games. A rotation is best understood as a coaching plan that can change with the goalies, the opponent and the calendar.

The choice is a judgment call informed by several factors, not a public algorithm with fixed weights. Goalie coach David Marcoux described considerations including the standings, travel, schedule, previous and expected workload, and injuries. Coaches also assess performance and the goalie’s physical and mental condition. NHL.com, “To play or to rest your starting goalie”

- Performance and consistency: Recent results matter, but a single box score is only one part of an assessment.
- Game importance: A team pursuing a playoff place may lean more heavily on its most consistent option. When a berth is secured, there may be more opportunity to schedule a rest start.
- Health and workload: Staff weigh injury status, games recently played, likely upcoming starts and recovery time.
- Schedule and travel: Back-to-backs, road trips, late arrivals and time-zone changes can affect when a goalie is ready.
- Individual rhythm: Some goalies prefer frequent games; others benefit more from rest and focused preparation.
- Depth: A reliable backup or another available goalie gives the staff more options for managing starts and practice load.
Who makes the call?
The goalie coach evaluates and supports the goalies, including technical and mental work, video, analytics and scouting, then gives the head coach a recommendation. The head coach makes the lineup decision. NHL goalie coach Mitch Korn summarized the distinction in 2026: “The head coach’s job is to pick who the starter is. My job is to give him the best information and knowledge on what I thought and then the head coach is the hammer as far as deciding who is going to play.” NHL.com, “Goalie coaches have transformed role, position over past 30 years”
Why back-to-backs often lead to a split
Playing on consecutive nights makes recovery and workload especially relevant, so teams often use both goalies across a back-to-back. But the performance evidence does not establish a settled, universal penalty for a goalie playing both games. Kraken writer Alison Lukan reported a 2013 analysis by Eric Tulsky finding a just-over-11-percent reduction in save percentage for a goalie playing both nights. Lukan also noted that follow-up analyses by Andrew Thomas of SportsMEDIA Technology and Dom Luszczyszyn of The Athletic found a smaller impact. Treat the 11-percent figure as a historical estimate reported in 2022, not a settled rule for every goalie or team. Seattle Kraken, “Examining Goalie Workload”

In 2021, then-Kraken coach Dave Hakstol put the common approach simply: “Typically you’re going to have a split on the back-to-backs.” That describes a tendency, not a mandate. A coach might keep a goalie in for both games if circumstances warrant, or choose a different plan based on health, the upcoming schedule and the available alternative.

Common ways teams distribute starts
| Approach | What it looks like | Why a team might use it |
|---|---|---|
| Give one goalie a larger share | The leading goalie starts more often, with the other used for selected games. | May suit a team that trusts one option more in the current standings or performance context. |
| Alternate as a tandem | Goalies take turns over a stretch of games. | Can provide both regular game rhythm and planned rest when the schedule is condensed. |
| Adjust game by game | Starts are allocated around form, health, travel, workload and upcoming games. | Offers flexibility when needs or conditions change. |
These are practical patterns, not ranked strategies. The sources do not establish a universal numerical threshold for when a team should move from one pattern to another.

Rest, rhythm and practice management
Goalies do not all respond to the same interval between starts. During a condensed 2021 schedule, Vegas alternated Marc-Andre Fleury and Robin Lehner for 21 consecutive games. Fleury described the benefit of the short gap between appearances: “You don’t have to wait too long before you’re in net. I play, get a little bit of rest, practice hard, cheer for ‘Lenny’ next game and then I can get back at it, so I think it’s not too bad because we’re playing so often.” Coach Pete DeBoer said both were getting two games a week and that he did not see rhythm as an issue in that schedule. This is an example of a team-specific plan, not a current recommendation for every tandem. NHL.com, “Goalie rest leading into playoffs tough task for teams to figure”
Teams can also manage the workload around starts rather than only changing who plays. NHL reporting describes giving the non-starting goalie a full night off, arranging travel to create rest before a start, using three goalies, and reducing high-workload practice segments. In 2014-15, Devan Dubnyk started 38 consecutive games while Darcy Kuemper and Niklas Backstrom handled most practices during that stretch. That historical example shows one way practice duties have been managed; it does not establish that such a run is optimal. NHL.com, “Goalie workload, rest, practice strategies”

What the emergency-backup goalie rule does—and does not do
NHL.com reported on October 2, 2026 that each team must roster an emergency backup goalie for the 2026-27 season. The report says the EBUG dresses with the team as No. 00, practices and travels with the team, and must meet eligibility limits: the goalie must not have played an NHL game under a standard player contract, played more than 80 professional games, or played professional hockey in the previous three seasons. The report concerns emergency availability; it does not set the normal rotation or determine which regular goalie starts. NHL.com, “NHL requires emergency backup goalie for all teams in 2026-27”
