For hypervisor iSCSI storage, choose TrueNAS SCALE if you want a managed, ZFS-centered storage workflow; choose Linux LIO if you want to configure and operate a Linux kernel iSCSI target directly. Neither is a universal performance winner: the deciding factors are your storage stack, administration model, hypervisor requirements, and tested failover behavior.
What differs: a storage platform versus a Linux target subsystem
iSCSI presents block storage across a network. The hypervisor connects as an initiator and sees a logical disk, or LUN—not a shared folder. The client manages its own filesystem on that block device. TrueNAS documents zvols and file or device extents as backing options for shares. TrueNAS iSCSI documentation
TrueNAS SCALE packages storage and iSCSI administration into a web-managed workflow. Linux LIO is the Linux kernel’s target subsystem; administrators configure it through tools such as targetcli. As the Debian experimental targetcli manual explains, targetcli lets you view, edit, and save the kernel target configuration. The practical distinction is who owns the integration and operational work: TrueNAS provides a managed storage environment, while LIO gives Linux administrators direct control over target and backstore configuration.
How the options compare
| Decision | TrueNAS SCALE | Linux LIO | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Administration | Web-managed storage workflow for creating storage and configuring iSCSI shares. TrueNAS documentation | Kernel target configured with targetcli or related Linux interfaces. Debian manual | Choose the workflow your team can operate and support consistently. |
| Backing storage | Documents zvols and file or device extents; the VMware guide describes a ZFS/zvol setup. TrueNAS documentation iXsystems VMware white paper, June 2023 | Supports file-backed, block-device-backed, pass-through SCSI, and other backstore choices. LIO project documentation | Compare the underlying storage stack and its failure behavior, not just the iSCSI target. |
| Hypervisor fit | The detailed cited setup guide is VMware-specific; verify features against your hypervisor and release. iXsystems VMware white paper | Framework support does not by itself guarantee compatibility; configuration, backstore, kernel, and initiator matter. LIO project documentation | Check persistent reservations, ALUA, multipathing, and vendor support for the exact versions. |
| Security | Documents CHAP, mutual CHAP, and access controls. TrueNAS documentation | Security is configuration-dependent; targetcli’s quickstart demonstrates a setup without authentication checks. Debian manual | Use appropriate authentication with initiator restrictions and an isolated storage network. |
| Performance | Depends on the complete hardware, ZFS, and network configuration. iXsystems VMware white paper | Backstore choice matters; LIO project guidance identifies IBLOCK as the typical performance choice. LIO project documentation | Benchmark the workload and configuration you will actually run. |
Check hypervisor features before building around either target
Support for a feature at the target-framework level is not the same as a working, supported end-to-end configuration. Verify the exact hypervisor version’s requirements for persistent reservations, ALUA, and multipathing, then confirm that the chosen target, backstore, and storage devices meet them. The TrueNAS documentation covers ALUA in the context of HA systems and cautions that the client must also support and enable it. TrueNAS iSCSI documentation LIO’s project documentation lists ALUA and persistent-reservation support, while warning that behavior depends on configuration and devices. LIO project documentation

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The TrueNAS VMware guide recommends multipathing for iSCSI networks. Treat that as VMware-specific vendor guidance from June 2023, not a universal recipe for every hypervisor. A resilient design also depends on redundant host interfaces, switches, and storage paths; test path loss and recovery rather than assuming that configured redundancy behaves correctly. The same guide’s claim of “up to 5 x 9’s of system availability” applies to a properly configured TrueNAS HA system and is a vendor statement, not an independently verified guarantee for an arbitrary deployment. iXsystems VMware white paper, June 2023
Plan security and configuration persistence
CHAP authenticates an initiator; mutual CHAP authenticates both ends. Neither replaces restricting which initiators may connect or isolating the storage traffic. TrueNAS documents access controls using initiator IQN, IP address, or CHAP username in its VMware guide. iXsystems VMware white paper, June 2023

With LIO, targetcli changes kernel target configuration immediately, but the administrator must save changes and may need to enable a distribution-specific service to restore the configuration after reboot. Package versions and service names vary by distribution. The manual also warns that FILEIO write-back can improve performance while increasing data-loss risk; weigh that trade-off rather than copying a quickstart configuration into production. For TrueNAS SCALE
TrueNAS centers the workflow on its storage platform and documents ZFS-backed options. Its current documentation states support for up to 1024 LUNs; confirm the limit in the stable documentation for the specific release you plan to deploy, because the live documentation is version-selectable. The June 2023 VMware white paper recommends sync=always for virtualization workloads and a 16 KB block size for typical VMware use cases. For Linux LIO
Choose the backstore to suit the device and required SCSI behavior. LIO’s project guidance calls IBLOCK the usual performance choice and advises against PSCSI in production unless its behavior is well understood, particularly for persistent reservations and ALUA. Benchmark the complete path, not the product names
The available documentation does not establish a controlled TrueNAS SCALE-versus-LIO comparison using matched hardware, network, hypervisor, and workload. It therefore cannot settle comparative throughput, latency, recovery time, or operational burden for your deployment.
Test both candidates on the hardware and hypervisor configuration you intend to use. Measure latency and throughput under representative I/O, observe queueing, and test path failure and recovery. Record durability-related settings and keep them equivalent where possible; a faster result is not comparable if it depends on a different write-safety trade-off. Treat jumbo frames as optional, not an automatic speed improvement: every device along the Ethernet path must support the same MTU. TrueNAS iSCSI documentation
