Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallStringing—also called oozing or “hairy prints”—is the fine filament strands or small blobs left between parts as the print head travels. Start with your printer’s default profile, then test retraction, nozzle temperature, filament condition and travel paths one at a time. The right fix depends on your printer and filament, so avoid copying a retraction distance or temperature from another machine.
Why an FDM print develops strings
Stringing happens when filament continues to leave the nozzle during a travel move between printed areas. Prusa identifies excessive nozzle temperature and incorrect retraction as common causes; moisture, nozzle residue and hotend heat-dissipation or assembly issues can also contribute. Bambu Lab additionally lists long travel with insufficient retraction, low-density filament settings, and worn or oversized nozzles as possible causes.
If strands appear mainly between separated parts, travel moves and retraction are useful places to start. If the problem persists broadly or does not respond to profile adjustments, check the filament and hardware as well.
Establish a reliable baseline before changing settings
Use the manufacturer’s default printer and material profile as your starting point. Prusa recommends its factory presets in PrusaSlicer rather than arbitrary setting changes. Before testing, note the printer and extruder arrangement, filament type, nozzle temperature and retraction settings. Change one factor at a time so you can tell what helped and identify any new quality problems.

Test the likely fixes in a controlled order
1. Tune retraction for your printer
Retraction pulls filament back during travel and resumes extrusion at the next print location. Adjust it in small, controlled tests using the profile or documentation for your machine; both distance and speed depend on printer design and material. Flexible filament can stretch and may need additional tuning.
Prusa’s own model-specific guidance illustrates why a universal distance is misleading: it caps retraction length at 2 mm for the MK2.5/S and MK3/S/+ and uses 3.2 mm in the Bowden MINI/MINI+ preset. Those figures apply to those Prusa setups, not as targets for other printers. UltiMaker gives broader educational ranges of 5–8 mm for Bowden and 1–3 mm for direct-drive setups, but these are not substitutes for a printer-specific profile.

2. Lower nozzle temperature cautiously
Prusa suggests testing a decrease of 5–10 °C, and Bambu Lab also recommends a moderate reduction. Keep the temperature within the suitable range for your filament. If extrusion becomes inconsistent or layer bonding worsens, the setting has gone too low for the material and print conditions.
3. Check whether the filament is damp
Moist filament can contribute to stringing. If you have another spool, compare results with it; otherwise, consider drying the filament according to material-specific instructions. There is no single drying temperature or duration established for all filament types. A dryer is optional equipment for a case where moisture appears to be the issue, not a fix every stringing problem needs.

4. Change travel paths or object placement
Strings can be affected by where the nozzle travels. Depending on your slicer and model, try avoiding perimeter crossings or enabling wipe while retracting. In Bambu Studio, Bambu Lab suggests reducing model spacing and enabling “Avoid crossing walls.” These options depend on the layout and slicer; sequentially printing objects one at a time can also reduce some crossings, but check that the toolhead will not collide with completed objects.
5. Inspect the nozzle and hotend if tuning fails
Clean filament residue from the nozzle. If you recently changed a hotend component, review its assembly. Prusa notes that heat dissipation problems can contribute; Bambu Lab also lists worn or oversized nozzles. Replace a nozzle only if inspection supports that diagnosis rather than treating replacement as the default response.

Choose the next test from the symptom
| What you observe | Useful next check | Trade-off or caution |
|---|---|---|
| Strands chiefly span travel moves between parts | Test retraction, temperature and travel-path options. | Use your printer’s profile; changing temperature too far can affect extrusion and layer bonding. |
| Results vary with the spool, or moisture is suspected | Compare another spool or dry the filament using instructions for its material. | Drying conditions vary by material; no universal temperature or time applies. |
| Profile and filament checks do not resolve the issue | Clean the nozzle and inspect nozzle condition and hotend assembly. | Hardware replacement is warranted only when inspection points to a problem. |
| The print is finished but has a few remaining strands | Use careful post-processing rather than changing printer settings for that part. | A heat gun can deform the print if applied too long. |
Remove remaining strings from a finished print
Prevention is preferable, but Prusa describes briefly aiming a heat gun at strings at around 200 °C for one or two seconds. Keep exposure brief: longer heating may deform the part. This is optional cleanup, not a diagnosis or preventive fix.
