To find the lowest cost per unit, divide the price you will actually pay by the package’s net quantity, then compare similar products using the same unit—such as cents per ounce. The biggest package is not always cheapest, and a sale or loyalty-card price only counts if you qualify for it.
What unit price tells you
A unit price is the cost of a product for a standard amount, such as dollars per pound, cents per ounce, or price per 100 milliliters. It puts different package sizes on a common basis. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes unit price as cost per unit of measure in its Unit Pricing Guide, SP 1181-2025.
How to calculate cost per unit
- Choose comparable products. Compare the same product, or products similar enough for the price comparison to be meaningful.
- Find the price you will pay. Check the shelf price and any sale, coupon, or loyalty-card conditions that apply to you.
- Read each package’s net quantity. Use the amount of product, not the package’s exterior dimensions.
- Divide price by quantity. USDA MyPlate summarizes the calculation as “TOTAL PRICE ÷ SIZE = UNIT PRICE” in its Shop Smart guidance.
- Express every result in the same unit. For example, convert pounds to ounces before comparing prices per ounce: 1 pound equals 16 ounces.
- Choose the lowest comparable figure. Then consider whether you can use and store that quantity.
For example, a 12-ounce item priced at $3.00 costs $0.25 per ounce ($3.00 ÷ 12). This is an arithmetic illustration, not a current store price. Do not compare a price per pound directly with one per ounce until both are converted to the same basis.
Worked example: the largest package may not win
Erie County Consumer Protection gives this corn-flakes example; the figures are illustrative, not current store prices:

| Package | Package price | Cost per ounce |
|---|---|---|
| 14 oz | $2.52 | 18¢ |
| 20 oz | $3.00 | 15¢ |
| 32 oz | $5.12 | 16¢ |
The 20-ounce package has the lowest unit price in this example, even though it is not the largest. The county’s bulk example also shows why consistent units matter: $1.44 per pound converts to 9¢ per ounce when divided by 16. See Erie County’s package comparison guidance.
How to read shelf unit prices and offers
A shelf label’s unit price can save you from doing the arithmetic, but verify the unit basis, package quantity, and price it uses. NIST’s U.S. best-practice guide recommends placing unit price near the total price and using consistent units within like product categories. It also recommends showing unit prices on sale signs as well as regular shelf labels.

- Check the offer terms. A displayed discounted price may require a loyalty card, digital coupon, purchase of multiple items, or another condition. Compare the price you are eligible to pay, not an offer you cannot use.
- Check whether the unit-price basis matches. Labels may use different units; convert them to one common measure before deciding.
- Recalculate if needed. If the label is missing or unclear, divide the applicable package price by its net quantity.
- Ask store staff about a discrepancy. If the shelf figure appears inconsistent with the quantity or checkout price, ask for clarification. Price-label protections and remedies depend on where you shop.
What the lowest unit price does—and does not—mean
A lower unit price is useful evidence of lower cost for a given amount, but it does not prove that unlike products are interchangeable or that the cheaper option is the best choice for your household. Consider whether you will use the full package, have room to store it, and find the product suitable for your needs. A larger quantity that goes unused may not deliver practical value.
Which pricing rules apply?
Unit-price label requirements and price-discrepancy protections vary by jurisdiction. NIST SP 1181-2025 is U.S. best-practice guidance for retailers and notes that state and territorial rules may add requirements; it is not a single nationwide labeling mandate.

NIST’s 2025 guide cites the Food Industry Association’s U.S. Grocery Shopper Trends 2023 for a finding that 74% of shoppers use unit pricing in a store when it is available. That is a secondary attribution in the NIST guide, not a fresh 2026 survey result.
